IMPORTANT HEALTH ALERT: Rabies-Positive Bat Found in Racine County

A bat found in our community has tested positive for rabies.

We urge all residents to take immediate action to protect their households. Your absolute best defense against this deadly virus is ensuring your pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations. Wisconsin state law requires rabies vaccines for pets, and it can save their life if they encounter infected wildlife.

Your next steps:
-Check records: Verify your pet’s vaccine status with your vet.
-Schedule boosters: If they are overdue or close to it, book an appointment immediately.
-Avoid wildlife: Keep a safe distance from wild animals, especially bats.
-Secure your home: Keep doors closed and repair any holes in window screens.

After 29 incredible years of dedicated service, we're saying "see you later" this Friday to someone who has truly left a lasting mark on our clinic.

For nearly three decades, Trish has been more than a valued team member—she's been a friendly face, a well recognized voice 😅, a trusted colleague, and our beloved "Treat Lady" (for both pets and us!). She really is a legend at Shorewood Animal Hospital.

Trish's kindness, compassion, and genuine care for coworkers, clients, and patients have made her a staple of our clinic and someone who is loved by all. While we'll certainly miss her, we're so grateful for the countless memories, laughter, nicknames she would give us, pounds she would put on us with her delicious treats she would bake, and years of dedication she has given.

Please join us in congratulating her on a well-earned retirement and wishing her nothing but happiness, relaxation, and exciting new adventures in this next chapter. Trish, thank you so much for 29 amazing years—you are truly one of a kind and will be deeply missed!! ❤️❤

We are so excited to announce... Dr. Cora Canvanaugh will be joining our team!

Dr. Cora Cavanaugh (née Catak) is originally from Turkiye where she grew up with love for animals, especially the strays, and always wanted to be a veterinarian. She completed her pre-veterinary studies in Brooklyn College in NYC where she volunteered for shelters such as NYCACC and ASPCA. She received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2020 where she volunteered for the Wildlife Clinic, was class representative for the Shelter Club and was a hospice foster, where she grew her love and passion caring for the elderly pets. Since graduation, she has worked in Emergency Medicine and ASPCA Poison Control. She loves being a veterinarian and her favorite aspects are internal medicine, surgery, pharmacology and pain management.

Cora and her husband Tom live in the East Side of Milwaukee with their son Oisin, their 3 dogs - Nessy the pitbull, Juliette the chihuahua and Bulut the rat terrier and their two cats, Claire and Panda. They love taking walks outside altogether, going to the beach, vegan cooking and exploring the city.

The 4th of July is just over a week away!

As fun and exciting as the holiday festivities are for us, they may not be as fun for our four legged friends. Fireworks, gatherings and other loud noises can cause stress and anxiety until morning comes. If your pet struggles with this, here are a couple of suggestions to make the night a bit calmer:

- Create a safe cozy space indoors
- Close curtains, blocking bright flashes
- White noise or TV on to mask booms
- Early potty breaks

An update on the beagles from Dr. Shearburn!

A beautiful day to save beagles! Ridglan will be closing for good!
Another 200 dogs, mostly 1 year old females were released today. They were examined and treated at a farm in Marshall, WI before heading off with Big Dog Ranch Rescue.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in helping and supporting these amazing pups. 🐶 💕

A huge thank you to Nutramax for hosting such a wonderful Milwaukee Zoo Dinner CE! It was great to see so many members of our team able to attend and enjoy the evening together. We had an amazing time connecting, learning, and experiencing such a unique setting. The CE was incredibly informative, and our team walked away with valuable insights and knowledge that we can bring back to our practice. We truly appreciate the opportunity to learn from such an engaging and well-organized event! ♥♥🐾

Big News!!

Our very own Dr. Shearburn helped to exam and rabies vaccinate 500 of the Ridglan Farms Beagles released to Big Dog Ranch Rescue. Over two days, the dogs were brought directly from Ridglan to a farm in Dane County where one barn was used for medical exams and another barn for caregiver interaction, including the first time these dogs would feel grass under their feet.

All dogs were microchipped and transferred to both local & regional rescues. Some even going to the Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Alabama or Florida, the organization that facilitated their release. After medical issues are addressed and they have had time to start socializing, the beagles will be up for adoption to private homes.

A huge win for the dogs! Thank you to Dr. Shearburn and all other volunteers who donated their time to give these dogs a chance. ♥♥🐾
