May 17th Club Day = Nosework + Detection Foundations 🎯

This is where a lot of people get it wrong — nosework isn’t just about the dog…
the handler usually needs more training than the dog does.

We’re going to break down the small, foundational steps so you actually know what you’re doing when you go home and practice.

What you’ll need to bring:
• Odors (birch, clove, anise) — I’ll have some, but bring your own if you can
• High value food (we’ll start here)
• Toy reward (for later progression)

Handler basics we’re covering:
• How to properly store odors (I use glass jars + q-tips)
• How to set up your own training space at home
• Using odor containment (to prevent cross contamination + sloppy indications)
• Why your dog ONLY wears a harness right before a search (this becomes a cue)
• Proper leash setup (drag leash, no handle — less interference)

We’ll also introduce “reward from source” so your dog starts building a clear association with odor → reward.

⚠️ This is NOT an imprinting session — this is about teaching you the system so you don’t create confusion later.
Long-term goal: a clean, focused final response (freeze, sit, or stand at source).

If you want to actually understand nosework instead of just hiding treats and hoping for the best… this is where you start.
