🐾 “I took all their toys away as they just kept ripping them to pieces!”

But what if ripping toys apart isn’t “bad behaviour” at all?

For many dogs, shredding, dissecting and pulling things apart taps into natural instincts. It’s a way of exploring, problem solving and expressing species-typical behaviour.

The goal isn’t always to stop the behaviour. The goal is often to give them safe and appropriate outlets for it.

That might look like:
🐾 Cardboard boxes to destroy
🐾 Lettuce, cabbage or paper parcels to shred
🐾 Enrichment toys designed for dissection
🐾 Soft toys you don’t mind losing
🐾 Sniffing and foraging activities that meet similar needs

Of course, safety matters. Not every dog can be trusted with every toy, and some will need supervision.

But before taking all the toys away, ask yourself:

Is my dog being naughty… or are they simply being a dog? 🤔
