Dr. Robin Kirtley is our next feature for Staff Appreciation Week.

Dr. Kirtley has been working with us since June of 2022. She always wanted to work with animals because she has always loved them more than people, especially because she was very shy as a child. She loves to help people and their animals, and has always loved solving mysteries in medicine. Dr. Kirtley received a Bachelor of Sciences in Agriculture from the Ohio State in 1985, and went on to earn her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine there in 1989. She was part of the 100th veterinary class at the Ohio State and the first veterinary class that was >50% women.

In her free time Dr. Kirtley loves to garden, read, hike, spending time with her new Grandbaby, dog training, cooking, watching football and basketball and spending time with her husband.

Dr. Fredrick Evans is a man of few words (and no photos) so we just had to compromise with his look a like for Staff Appreciation Week.

Dr. Evans graduated with honor from the Auburn School of Veterinary Medicine in 1977. His interest in Veterinary Medicine sparked from a curiosity to understand how the animal body works and the mechanisms of disease, allowing for intervention to improve the health and lives of patients. He finds joy in the variety of cases and species that he is able to treat. Clients know that he loves to crack a joke and is always trying to make everyone around him laugh.

In his free time, Dr. Evans can usually be found on his apple orchard pruning trees and picking apples. He is happy to have just added his dog Shadeux (Shadow) to his family, a rescued Rottweiler. For years he raised Paso Fino horses, rottweilers, and akitas. He enjoys spending time with his wife and 2 daughters.

Next up on our Staff Appreciation Week features is receptionist Sheila Meyer.

Sheila has been a member of our team for a year and a half now, but has been bringing her pets to Dr. Schaaf for decades. She had the desire to start in veterinary medicine because of her love of animals and has found great joy and fulfillment during her time here. Her favorite things at work are seeing the variety of dog and cat breeds, watching puppies and kittens grow up over the course of their visits, and engaging with client during the good and bad times. She considers herself to be fortunate to be able to work part-time with such an incredible group of people.

During her free time you'll find Sheila working on crafts including crochet and needlepoint as well as working in her garden.

Next on our Staff Appreciation Week feature is our Veterinary Assistant, Sarah Schaaf!

While Sarah has technically been a full time employee since 2020, she has really been in the clinic since she was 6 weeks old. She is grateful to have grown up here, having relationships with so many wonderful pets and clients, learning from her father Dr. Schaaf, and raising many animals that her parents brought home over the years. She is also thankful for the many staff members that have shaped her over the years, especially long time receptionist Shirley Bagby, who was like a grandmother to her and who is dearly missed by us all.

Sarah loves being able to provide care for pets from the time they are puppies and kittens to their last moments with us. She has a special interest in anesthesia, end of life care and client education. She has never met a kitten she didn't like.

Outside of work, you can usually find Sarah at her other job- running her equine photography business (Sarah Schaaf Photography). She also enjoys spending time with her dogs Vincent and Bruno, making improvements on her house, playing her saxophone, spending time with her husband, and her best friend- Patrick The miniature horse who she has had since she was 2 years old. Sarah says one of her greatest joys is continuing to learn- whether it be about history, science, or new discoveries in veterinary medicine. Education is the greatest gift we can give one another.

First on our Staff Appreciation Week feature is our Practice manager, Jessica Schaaf!

Jessica has been working at BCVC for 34 years now! She considered becoming a veterinarian when she was younger, but decided to pursue a degree in music while in college at the University of Evansville. She also raced and trained standardbreds (harness racing horses) for years. When she was ready for a career change, veterinary medicine seemed like the most logical choice given her desire to help animals. She loves to help animals that others may say are beyond help. Outside of work, Jessica finds joy by spending time in the barn with her horses, gardening, watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball, reading, and spending time with her many animals (2 dogs, 8 cats, 5 horses, 1 cow, 1 bird and 6 chickens).

Jessica says "While veterinary medicine and the world we live in has changed incredibly since I started working here, I still enjoy our long time clients and the new people and pets I meet. I'm very proud of the business Dr. Schaaf opened here in 1978, and the memories of the services we have provided to our community make me happy".
