Pawsitive Tuesday Tip: Let the Dog Choose the Hello
A friendly greeting should begin with the dog having a choice. The CDC recommends asking the owner’s permission, remaining still, and allowing an unfamiliar dog to approach first. Petting should stop if the dog appears frightened, uncomfortable, or wants space. Healthy Pets, Healthy People

In plain language: socialization does not mean your dog must greet everyone—calmly observing people without interacting is valuable, too.

Practical takeaway: Instead of bringing your dog directly to someone, create space and let your dog decide whether to approach; if they move away, honor that choice.

Some of my favorite family moments don’t come with big plans.

They’re the little things: a walk together, laughing at something ridiculous the dog did, or squeezing onto the couch when the pets have somehow claimed all the good spots. 😂🐾

Life gets busy. Today’s reminder—for me, too—is to slow down long enough to enjoy the people and paws sharing it with us. 💚

Your Saturday challenge: Take your training somewhere slightly different!

Try a familiar skill in an easy new spot:
🏡 Touch on the porch
🌳 Recall in your securely fenced yard
🚶 A few steps of left or right on a quiet stretch
🛏️ Settle on a mat in another room

Keep it short, bring rewards, and make it easier if your dog needs help. A new place can make an old skill feel brand-new!

Finish with something your pup enjoys. It’s the weekend, after all. 💚

You see a decoration.
Your dog sees a VERY questionable new neighbor. 😂

If your pup hesitates, give them time and space. Let them observe from a comfortable distance, reward a relaxed check-in, and move along when they’re ready.

They don’t have to investigate everything to have a successful walk!

Training Tip Tuesday: Every Hello Is Optional!

Does your dog think every dog on a walk is a potential best friend? 😂

This week’s fact: Dogs can become frustrated when they expect to greet every dog they see but can’t reach them.

Let’s practice making “just passing by” rewarding, too!

✅ Start far enough away that your dog can stay comfortable.
✅ Mark “Yes!” and reward when they notice another dog and check back in with you.
✅ Keep moving together, then enjoy a sniff break.
✅ If they’re pulling, staring, or barking, add space and make it easier.

This week’s challenge: Reward three comfortable check-ins around a distraction. Distance counts—there’s no prize for getting closer!

Takeaway: Your dog can enjoy seeing other dogs without needing to meet every one.
