We all want our horses warm and comfortable — but winter also brings increased fire and injury risks if we’re not careful with equipment. Space heaters, heat lamps, extension cords, and overloaded outlets in barns can be extremely dangerous.

Winter safety reminders:
• Avoid unattended heaters or heat lamps
• Use outdoor-rated extension cords ONLY
• Keep cords elevated and protected
• Store hay away from heat sources
• Keep aisles clear of ice & clutter

A warm horse means nothing if the barn isn’t safe. A quick walk-through of your space could save lives this winter.

If you’re unsure about the safest way to set up your barn or stalls for cold weather, we’re always here to offer guidance. Safety first, always. 🔥❄️

MYTH vs FACT: Blanketing Horses in Winter 🐴❄️

MYTH: Horses always need a blanket in cold weather
FACT: Healthy horses with a good winter coat often stay warmer without one. Their natural coat and circulation are designed to insulate them — especially if they have shelter and enough hay.

MYTH: Blanketing prevents weight loss
FACT: Adequate forage is what truly keeps horses warm. Digestion produces internal heat, which is far more effective than a blanket alone.

MYTH: The thicker the blanket, the better
FACT: Over-blanketing can cause overheating, sweating, dehydration, and skin issues — especially during temperature swings.

Horses that MAY benefit from a blanket:
✔️ Seniors
✔️ Thin or hard keepers
✔️ Clipped horses
✔️ Sick or injured horses
✔️ Horses without shelter

Good rule of thumb:
If you would be uncomfortable standing outside in their conditions with only a coat of hair — your horse might be too.

Not sure if your horse needs a blanket this winter? Message us or give us a call — we’d be happy to help you decide what’s best for your individual horse. ❄️💙

Ask the Vet: Winter Edition ❄️🐴

As we move through the colder months, we start seeing the same important (and sometimes confusing) questions come up again and again — and that’s exactly why we’re opening up an “Ask the Vet” post for you today.

Winter can be tough on horses in ways that aren’t always visible right away. Changes in water intake, feed requirements, movement, hoof health, respiratory health, and overall comfort can sneak up on even the most attentive owners. No question is too small when it comes to your horse’s health.

This is your chance to ask anything related to:
• Winter feeding & nutrition
• Blanketing & shelter needs
• Hydration concerns
• Hoof issues & farrier care
• Weight loss or gain
• Senior horse care
• Stiffness or mobility changes
• Injury prevention in icy conditions
• General health, behavior, or management

Drop your questions in the comments below or send us a private message if you prefer to keep it confidential. Our team will be responding throughout the week to help guide you in the right direction.

Your horse depends on you — and we’re here to support you every step of the way. Let’s keep them safe, healthy, and comfortable this winter. 🤍❄️

As temperatures drop, horses require more energy to stay warm. For many horses, that means their current feeding program may no longer meet their needs.

Hay is the primary heat source for horses because digestion creates internal warmth. This makes quality forage more important than ever in winter. Some horses will also benefit from added fat sources, senior feeds, or soaked supplements if they struggle to maintain weight.

What worked in the fall may not be enough now. If your horse is dropping weight, going off feed, or looking dull, it’s time for an evaluation — not just an increase in random grain.

We can help you adjust smartly to support body condition without creating digestive stress. Reach out for an individualized winter feeding consult. 🌾❄️

Many owners associate dehydration with hot summer days, but winter is actually one of the most common times horses become chronically dehydrated. When water is icy cold, horses naturally drink less, even if they really need it.

Silent signs of winter dehydration can include:
• Dry manure or decreased manure output
• Loss of interest in feed
• Lack of energy
• Increased risk of impaction colic

Heated buckets, water tank de-icers, loose salt, and wet feeds like soaked hay cubes or beet pulp can make a world of difference. Sometimes a small change goes a long way.

If your horse isn’t cleaning up water or has had noticeable changes, we encourage you to address it sooner rather than later. Prevention is always easier than treatment. Reach out if you want recommendations tailored to your setup. ❄️💧

As the temperatures drop and winter approaches, it’s the perfect time to think about preventative care — and a simple blood test can go a long way in keeping your horse healthy all season. 🩸❄️

Bloodwork isn’t just for sick horses — it’s a powerful tool to catch potential issues before they become serious. Through a small sample, we can assess your horse’s:
-Organ function: Make sure kidneys, liver, and other vital organs are working optimally.
-Nutritional status: Identify vitamin or mineral deficiencies that could affect energy, coat condition, or performance.
-Early signs of infection or inflammation: Detect problems before they show obvious clinical signs.

Preventative bloodwork allows us to make informed decisions about diet, supplements, and medical care — helping your horse enter winter strong, healthy, and ready for whatever the season brings.

Don’t wait until a problem arises. Schedule a bloodwork check for your horse this fall and give them the best chance at a smooth, healthy winter. Your horse will thank you with every step, trot, and canter! 🐎💛
