Dental Discount Days at Family Paws! Call today to schedule your pet's dental before time runs out!

Dental disease is one of the most common health problems we see in dogs and cats, yet it often goes unnoticed because our pets can’t tell us when their mouths hurt.

Signs of dental disease to watch for: 🦷 Bad breath 🦷 Red, swollen, or bleeding gums 🦷 Yellow or brown buildup on the teeth 🦷 Difficulty chewing or dropping food 🦷 Pawing at the mouth or decreased appetite

Even if your pet is still eating normally, they may be experiencing dental pain! Many pets instinctively hide their discomfort, which is why regular veterinary dental examinations are so important.

Today we remember the lives lost on this day 25 years ago.

We also want to remember and honor the four legged heroes who helped in the days following.

Courtesy of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum:
Within hours after the attacks of Sept. 11, thousands of rescue workers from across America deployed to ground zero to help in the search and rescue efforts. Joining the endeavor were dogs specially trained in search and rescue, police work, therapy and comfort. It is estimated that more than 300 dogs took part in the search, rescue and recovery efforts at ground zero.

Search and rescue dogs (SAR) certified by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) specialize in disaster response skills. Trained to search and detect living human scent, their mission was to find survivors buried in the rubble. The last living person rescued from ground zero 27 hours after the collapse was found by one of these search and rescue dogs.

Working alongside their handlers, the four-legged heroes worked tirelessly climbing huge piles of debris while fires still smoldered. The search for signs of life or human remains was mentally and physically taxing on the dogs, as the SAR dogs began to get discouraged and lose their search drive. Aware of the importance of morale in these dogs and to keep their motivation high, their handlers would stage a “mock find” so the dogs could feel successful.

Veterinarians were stationed at the site to help care for these dogs. Working 12-hour shifts on the pile, the dogs needed to have their paw pads, eyes and noses cleaned often.

Yes, does specifically pertain to human eyes, but we're going to bend the rules a bit and use it to talk about your pet's eye health.

Those bright, curious eyes are an important part of your pet’s health—and changes can sometimes signal a problem that needs veterinary attention.

As a veterinary team, we recommend keeping an eye out for:
🔹 Redness or swelling
🔹 Excessive tearing or discharge
🔹 Squinting or keeping an eye closed
🔹 Cloudiness or a change in eye colour
🔹 Pawing or rubbing at the eyes
🔹 Bulging or changes in the size or appearance of the eye
🔹 Bumping into things or other signs of vision changes

Never use leftover human or pet eye medication without speaking to your veterinarian first. Some eye conditions can look similar but require very different treatments.

If your pet’s eye suddenly looks different, is painful, or your pet is squinting, don’t wait it out—contact your veterinary team promptly. Eye problems can progress quickly, and early treatment can make a big difference.

Regular wellness exams also give us an opportunity to check your pet’s eyes and overall eye health.

Our Breed of the Week is the Basset Hound!

With their long ears, soulful eyes, and short legs, Basset Hounds are one of the most recognizable and lovable dog breeds. Originally bred for scent hunting, these gentle companions have an incredible sense of smell—second only to the Bloodhound!

Basset Hounds are known for their easygoing personalities, loyalty, and affectionate nature. While they enjoy a good nap, they also benefit from regular walks and playtime to help maintain a healthy weight and support their joints.

Their unique build means they can be prone to certain health concerns, including ear infections, obesity, back problems, and joint issues. Keeping their ears clean, feeding a balanced diet, and scheduling routine veterinary checkups are important steps in helping them stay healthy and comfortable.

Whether your Basset Hound is following an exciting scent or snuggled up for a cozy afternoon nap, our veterinary team is here to provide compassionate care every step of the way.

Do you have a Basset Hound with those famous floppy ears? We'd love to see them! Share a photo in the comments below. ❤️🐶
