Happy National 'Work Like a Dog' Day!

Ok, so today we're celebrating TRUE working dogs, not ones that pretend to work like Sassy (pictured below).

Today we celebrate the incredible working dogs who dedicate their lives to helping people every single day. From search and rescue missions to guiding those with visual impairments, protecting communities, detecting dangers, herding livestock, and providing lifesaving support, these remarkable dogs show unwavering loyalty, intelligence, and heart.

Behind every successful working dog is a dedicated handler, countless hours of training, and an extraordinary bond built on trust. Their courage and commitment remind us that heroes come in all shapes—and sometimes they have four paws and a wagging tail.

Thank you to all the working dogs and their handlers for your service, sacrifice, and the difference you make every day!

Our Breed of the Week is the Maine C**n!

With their impressive size, tufted ears, fluffy tails, and gentle personalities, Maine C**ns have earned the nickname "gentle giants" of the cat world. These affectionate, intelligent cats are known for forming strong bonds with their families and often enjoy being involved in whatever their humans are doing.

Their long, luxurious coats benefit from regular brushing to help prevent mats and reduce shedding. Maine C**ns also enjoy interactive play and climbing opportunities to keep them physically and mentally active.

Like all breeds, Maine C**ns can be predisposed to certain health conditions, including heart disease (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy), hip dysplasia, and some inherited genetic disorders. Regular veterinary exams, preventive care, and early screening can help detect potential concerns and keep your feline friend feeling their best.

Whether your cat is a playful kitten or a distinguished senior, our team is here to help them enjoy a lifetime of health and happiness.

Our Breed of the Week is the Alaskan Malamute! One of Dr. Lizz's favorite breeds, her Malamute below is named Mora!

Strong, loyal, and incredibly affectionate, the Alaskan Malamute is one of the oldest Arctic sled dog breeds. Originally bred to pull heavy loads across snowy landscapes, these gentle giants are known for their intelligence, endurance, and love of family.

Their thick double coat keeps them warm in cold climates, but it also means they need regular brushing and extra care during warmer months to help prevent overheating. Malamutes also thrive on daily exercise and mental enrichment to keep both their bodies and minds healthy.

At our veterinary hospital, we (and Dr. Lizz in particular) love caring for amazing breeds like the Alaskan Malamute! Whether your companion is a hardworking adventurer or a couch-loving cuddle bug, regular wellness exams, preventive care, and routine checkups are key to helping them live a long, healthy life.

Dachshunds may be small, but they're packed with courage, curiosity, and charm! ❤️ Their unique long backs and short legs make them one of the most recognizable breeds—but they also need a little extra care to stay healthy.

Here are a few tips for keeping your Dachshund happy:
🐶 Maintain a healthy weight to reduce stress on their spine.
🦴 Use ramps instead of letting them jump on and off furniture.
🚶 Enjoy regular, moderate exercise to keep their muscles strong.

Family Paws Veterinary is proud to welcome Dr. Meyers to our team!

Dr. Paige Myers hails from downriver and grew up in Southeast Michigan. She completed her undergraduate degree at University of Michigan in Ecology and went to St. George’s University in Grenada for Veterinary School.

She is excited to be back in Michigan and pursue her love of treating animals at Family Paws. Dr. Meyers loves reading a good book, thrifting clothes, and hanging out with her two island kitties, Penny and Percy, as well as her Shih Tzu, Gigi.

Today, we remember the brave soldiers who landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Their courage, sacrifice, and determination helped change the course of history and secure the freedoms we enjoy today.

We also want to remember and celebrate the brave canines who served their country and their fellow soldiers on that fateful day in 1944.

Military dogs played a pretty big role during Operation Overlord on June 6, 1944. The Allies brought in specially trained canines for reconnaissance, mine detection, and delivering messages across the Normandy beaches.

Military working dogs embedded with specific parachute battalions during the D-Day invasion. These animals jumped with their human handlers in the early hours of June 6th.

Para Dogs worked directly with the British 6th Airborne Division. These units faced some of the toughest assignments during Operation Overlord.

The dogs gave troops a tactical edge that humans just couldn’t match. Their senses picked out hidden German positions and b***y traps, detecting enemies at distances no human could.
