Desensitizing Your Dog for Grooming.
As groomers, we see many dogs that struggle with fear during grooming and many times clients ask how can they help their dog. While a normal grooming schedule is a good start it's not enough for a fearful dog. If you have a dog that is fearful of the groom, it's never too late to begin to desensitize them at home. Below are some steps you can take at home to begin the process.
Tools Needed: metal comb or soft slicker brush, and something that vibrates (small clipper, toothbrush, grinder), TREATS
Steps:
1. Gently touch the tool to your dog’s body (keep motorized tools OFF). Praise and reward with a treat. Repeat 5 times daily .
2. Once comfortable, move the tool against your dog for 3–5 seconds, then reward. Gradually increase time (still OFF for motorized items).
3. Begin light brushing in a non matted/knotted area. Turn the item on and run it along the body. offering treats to keep the experience positive.
Going slow and creating a positive experience is the key to build confidence over time. Have questions? Our groomers are more than happy to explain the process in detail at your next groom!
