Sniffing is encouraged by me and many other professionals.

Walks should include sniffing. I had the opportunity recently with a Chihuahua and I didn't get a picture.

The Chihuahua barked that's normal. He would spin and I observed licking of the mouth, fast breathing. On a walk he moved quickly and marked often. Rarely ever stopping to sniff.

I looked at this tiny dog and thought to myself. I am going to turn your sniffer on. I used the environment he was familiar with. Looking at him with a small soft treat, I dropped the treat into the grass. His sniffer was turned on as he quickly moved to get it. He got it and he looked up at me ( check in) I tossed another and used "find it" I repeated I had his sniffer turned on.

I scattered a few more on the ground. I stood observing this dog with a smile. The change in body language was softening, the spinning stopped and barking too.

Mental stimulation is powerful.

Never punish a growl. A dog that has been punished to the point the growl has stopped becomes dangerous.

That growl helps the dog communicate. There are six types of barks. There is the growl and then there is the deep down belly growl.

Barking and growling is communication.

I entered a home yesterday I was barked at as I stood before three dogs. I just stood not moving, no eye contact, no talking , keeping my body turned slightly.. I carry a tote for a reason and not just my tools.

The barking continued and then I heard a growl. I stood and was thinking about the growl and I was happy to hear it. As crazy as it may seem that growl is a warning I understand.

The growl is a warning of what might come next. I shifted slightly to bring my tote closer to my front area. The barking continued and I started talking walking a slow pace into the home.

I requested for the dogs to be put into crates. I chose to sit down near the growler.

A history of information was taken in. I grabbed my lamb treats and I tossed a treat into each crate. I returned to my seat near the growler.

I then requested I wanted time with each dog outdoors. Observing body language and using "find it" as I tossed small soft treats to the grass.

The Initial Consultation ended with me outdoors with all three dogs.

Never punish the growl. That one warning ⚠️ a bite could be next helped me on how I would take my next step.

Listen to the dog. Fear, stress and frustration is real.

Happy Tuesday!

Dogs can pull on leash for many reasons. The lack of training and communication. The desire to move fast towards something the dog wants to check out. Possibly a squirrel, bird or rabbit. Even a water bowl on a hot day.

Humans also pull on the leash. The handler is pulling and the dog is pulling and next both handler and dog are out of balance.

Walk & Train is the opportunity to learn how to communicate with your dog and take the pulls out of walks.

Happy Monday!

My sessions are for 1- hour but it's more than training, this includes welfare time for dogs.

They get breaks and get to be a dog too. Welfare is important too.

Resource Guarding is natural. When a guardian experiences this for the first time from their dog, it can cause emotions to rise in the human too.

As a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant I will take in a lot of history. The dogs health and any current medications.

I will always recommend speaking to your veterinarian about the medication if behavior change has happened.

When I am on board there will be a plan and there are times when it's small steps.

Imagine doing something you do with your dog all the time, then suddenly the dog changes in behavior something you have never seen before. It's frightening and very concerning.

As I collected more information I found trigger stacking in the dogs life too. So the past weeks week I have the dog on a different routine.
Giving the dogs mind and body a break.

A dog is not broken or bad and most times dogs can be helped and humans too.

Dog's don't bite out of the blue. This dog did not bite, he made a good choice but he scared the guardian.

Always listen to your dog and the guardian made a good choice by seeking for professional help.

Collecting pieces of information can help.

Enjoy your day!

A beautiful day to be in a training session. An adolescent Labrador Retriever learning how to navigate in our human world.

BAT leash skills gave the dog a sense of freedom 👏 as he was on his walk today.
