🐾 The 3-3-3 Rule: Give Them Time to Feel at Home ❤️
Bringing home a shelter dog or cat is the beginning of a beautiful journey, but remember — they need time to adjust. 🏡
Many shelter animals have been through so much. They may have experienced changes in homes, unfamiliar people, loud environments, loss, and uncertainty. When they finally arrive in a loving home, they don’t always know right away that they’re safe.
That’s where the 3-3-3 Rule comes in. 💕
🐾 3 DAYS — Feeling overwhelmed
Your new pet may feel scared, confused, hide, sleep a lot, refuse food, or seem unsure of their surroundings. Give them a quiet, safe space and let them decompress.
🐾 3 WEEKS — Learning the routine
They’re beginning to settle in, learn your schedule, and understand that they’re safe. Their personality may start to emerge, and you may notice behaviors you didn’t see at first. Patience and consistency are key!
🐾 3 MONTHS — Building trust
Your pet may begin to feel truly at home, develop stronger bonds with you, and feel more confident in their new environment. Trust takes time, and every small step forward matters. ❤️
✨ Remember: The 3-3-3 Rule is a guideline, not a deadline. Every animal is different. Some adjust sooner, while others need much longer — especially those who have experienced trauma or repeated changes.
Please don’t expect them to love you immediately, trust you right away, or show their full personality on day one.
Give them patience. Give them space. Give them consistency. Give them love without expectations.
They’ve been through enough changes. Let your home be the place where they finally get to exhale. 🐶🐱💗
Adopting isn’t just giving an animal a home. It’s giving them the time and security to believe they’re home. 🏡❤️
Please share this with anyone adopting a shelter dog or cat! The more we understand, the better we can help them thrive. 🐾
