Shawnee Animal Welfare

Shawnee Animal Welfare This page is managed by the City of Shawnee Animal Shelter. It is NOT monitored 24/7. They will dispatch an Animal Welfare Officer if one is available.

The City of Shawnee Animal Welfare focuses on encouraging responsible pet ownership by promoting and protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the residents and pets of the City of Shawnee through education, enforcement and community partnership. If you have a problem with strays, please call 405-273-2121 for the Shawnee Police Dept. HAVE YOU FOUND/SEEN A STRAY PET/ANIMAL? Here are some VERY I

MPORTANT things to consider BEFORE you pick up that stray pet.

1) Keep in mind, that when you pick up a stray animal, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT ANIMAL UNTIL YOU MAKE OTHER ARRANGEMENTS FOR THAT ANIMAL OR UNTIL YOU FIND THE OWNER

2) IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO CARE FOR AND BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT STRAY ANIMAL UNTIL ARRANGEMENTS CAN BE MADE.... DO NOT PICK UP THAT ANIMAL!!!!!

3) STRAY ANIMALS CAN BE VERY FEARFUL AND CAN BITE or can be exposed to an illness that you are not aware of! Do not put yourself, your family members and your family pets at risk by picking up a stray animal.

4) It is always best to call and inform the appropriate authority about the location and description of the stray animal you have seen. Be sure to note these helpful identifying characteristics:
1) Wearing a collar? Does collar have tags?
2) Approximate size or weight
3) Approximate breed type
4) Color/s

***PLEASE SHARE THIS POST TO KEEP FAWNS FROM BEING TAKEN FROM THE MOTHERS.***

Every spring and early summer, white-tailed deer give birth and raise their young across Oklahoma. During this time, it is very common to come across a fawn lying alone in a field, wooded area, or even yards/near homes in urban and suburban areas.

The good news? This is usually completely normal.

Mother deer often leave their fawns hidden in a safe spot while they forage nearby. The fawn's best chance of survival is to remain exactly where its mother left it.

💚 If you care, leave it there. 💚

You can help by:
• Keeping dogs leashed or from roaming freely
• Avoiding mowing, weed-eating, or other yard work near the fawn for the day
• Giving the area plenty of space and minimizing disturbance

How can you tell if a fawn may truly need help? Look for these signs:
• Numerous ticks clustered around the eyes, face, and ears.
• A dirty fawn with visible wounds or dried blood that has not been cleaned.
• A fawn that is persistently following people, dogs, or other animals while crying out.
• The tips of the fawn's ears are curled back due to dehydration.
• A general, unkept appearance like it has not been groomed by mom.

If you observe any of these signs, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for guidance.

Please do not move a fawn before speaking with WildCare Oklahoma at 405-872-9338 or another licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Well-intentioned people sometimes accidentally "rescue" healthy fawns that are simply waiting for their mothers to return. This is sad for the baby and its mother.

Our goal is always to keep wildlife where it belongs—wild, free, and with its natural family whenever possible.

PSA.... please rinse out your cans before putting them in the trash... not only will it help keep the bugs out of your trash but the main reason is... animals won't get their heads stuck in the cans. We had 2 separate calls today with cats that had their heads stuck in them. We are very grateful to the citizens that called them in and one that stayed with the cat. We are happy to say both cats are fine. Again please rinse out your can before throwing them in the trash! Thank you!
