Twenty-five years later, we remember the lives lost, honor those who served, and give special recognition to the four-legged heroes who worked beside them.

More than 300 dogs are estimated to have participated in the search, rescue, recovery, and comfort efforts following the attacks. Some were trained to search for survivors. Others searched for human remains. Therapy and comfort dogs helped bring a moment of peace to people facing unimaginable loss.

FEMA deployed 80 search-and-rescue dogs as part of 20 certified urban search-and-rescue teams to New York, with additional canine teams responding to the Pentagon and other locations.

These dogs climbed through unstable mountains of debris, worked through smoke and dust, and searched for hours alongside their handlers. One of the last living survivors found at Ground Zero was located by a search-and-rescue dog.

Dogs like Bretagne, Apollo, Riley, Sage, and Trakr became symbols of courage, loyalty, and hope. They remind us of something we see every day in rescue: dogs may not understand the world the way we do, but they have an extraordinary ability to show up when we need them most.

We remember the firefighters, police officers, first responders, military personnel, volunteers, and countless ordinary people who ran toward danger to help others.

And we remember the dogs.
