Teaching your dog (or giraffe) to wait to be fed isn’t about making them wait a long time. It’s about helping them learn that a little patience pays off and can lead to something they want… dinner! 🦒

Treat jars. Around your house. DO IT!!

Do you have a jar or jars around your house as reward stations?

At Paula's house she has a jar filled with Crunchy-O's to reward the dogs for coming when called from the backyard. It's a simple way to reward desirable behavior. It sets the dogs up for success by having treats at the ready, too.

You may want one by your front door for guests to reward your dog for not jumping to greet.

It's all about setting everyone up for success.

Adorable Snoopy has been prepping for his therapy dog and Canine Good Citizen tests, and he’s doing FABULOUS with his training!

We took the skills he’s been practicing to Home Depot, and he totally crushed it! 🤩 Here he is showing off some loose leash walking with turns and stops!

My favorite part? The amazing relationship he has with his mom! That connection always comes first in training and is the foundation for everything we build together. 💙🐾

In nosework, “sourcing” is when a dog follows odor toward its highest concentration. Ideally, we want dogs continuing to work to get as close to the odor source as possible!👃

Watch sniffy girl Carley catch odor and circle back toward the library return bin, then keep working to pinpoint the source.

The tin containing the scented Q-tips is on the bin between the E and T in “RETURN,” but it’s pretty well camouflaged. Good thing Carley’s got a great sniffer!

She follows her nose and puts it right on the odor tin. Way to go, Carley! 🙌

Such a great Manners 101 class tonight! 🐕💚 After warming up with engagement exercises, we practiced recall (coming when called) and started building the foundations of loose leash walking!

We also discussed how dogs don’t generalize well. Knowing a skill at home or in one setting doesn’t automatically mean they’ll understand it at the park or somewhere new, especially with distractions!

Dogs need practice in MANY different places and environments to learn that the same skills apply in each setting. Start in quieter, easier locations and gradually build up to busier, more challenging environments as your dog is ready. Going straight from practicing in your living room to a busy park is a big leap!

Make things easier when needed, reward their successes, and help them build confidence every step of the way! 🐾

You know what’s awesome about scent work (besides, oh, five million other things)?? You can do fun stuff like THIS if you want! 👻

Last weekend, Hold The Line K9, LLC hosted a super fun haunted house search at 13 Stories Haunted House in Newnan! It was a BLAST!!

Teams even had the option to search in the dark with special sound and lighting effects!! 😱

Sniffing with a side of spooky? Yes, please! 🎃🙌

You don’t have to say “no,” “ah-ah,” or make a sound every time your dog makes a mistake during training… especially when they’re learning something brand new!

Imagine doing a crossword puzzle and hearing “NO!” or an annoying buzzer every time you wrote an incorrect letter. Would crossword puzzles be so popular? Would you feel motivated to keep trying? 🤔😓

Repeatedly pointing out mistakes can be seriously demotivating for dogs, and may make them less willing to try, especially when they’re still figuring out what you want.

If your dog is working for a reward, and they get it wrong, it simply means they don’t get a reward that time. Calmly reset and give them another chance and reward the behavior you’re looking for.

If mistakes keep happening, that’s our cue to make things easier! Break the task into smaller steps, reduce distractions, or make your instructions clearer so your dog has plenty of opportunities to succeed.

Learning should build confidence and enthusiasm… and make your dog eager to try again and again! 💚

Watch as 3 nosework dogs discover that odor can be hidden in cracks in a sidewalk! 🤯

“Crack hides” are when the scented q-tips are tucked into small cracks or crevices, like gaps in pavement. They challenge dogs to follow their noses and pinpoint odor, even when there’s no obvious object to investigate!

A great reminder to trust your dog, give them time to work, and let their nose lead the way!
