One thing I've learned from talking to breeders across the country is that very few people expect their flock to make them rich. (The saying the best way to have a million dollars showing chickens is to start off with two million dollars?)

But here's the secret: every successful breeding program starts with creating value with what you've got. If you sink a million dollars into your flock, right now, most people would just be a million dollars in the hole. You've got to put your money where it matters.

That's one of the reasons I've spent so much time building Pips 'n Chicks. Whether it's the auctions, Poultry Pro, or the virtual shows, the goal has always been the same: give breeders better tools at low (or no) cost. My birds now pay for themselves, and then some.

What's the first thing your flock ever paid for? Feed? A new coop? More birds? Nothing yet?

I think online poultry auctions are still seen as "just a baby".
People buy tractors, cars, and large livestock online every day - just look at SCOnline. There's no reason quality poultry can't have auctions that are built specifically for our community.

That's what we're trying to create with Poultry Auctions as a place where buyers and sellers actually know what they're looking at.

We're still building, still improving, and listening to feedback every day. Help us make it grow! https://f.mtr.cool/apwmaiovab

One thing I think a lot of people don't realize is how much information you can gather from a single photo.

A good side picture lets you evaluate the body length, balance, muscle patterns, condition of the animal, front end extension, depth of body, and more. Will the photo tell you everything? No. But add a top view or a video, and you can pretty easily tell if the animal has the main pieces and components, has been well cared for, and is put together.

That's why serious breeders spend so much time getting good sale photos, pictures of their flock, or images on their website. A great photographer can't make a bad animal look good, but a trashy picture can absolutely make a good animal look bad.

A lot of people ask why I keep starting new projects. Honestly, it's usually because I get annoyed when something doesn't exist.

I wanted sources to follow for all of the genetics info in quail, so I made a database (https://f.mtr.cool/ipusocoypl I wanted a better way to manage my own flock (it already existed for cattle, why not chickens??), so I built Poultry Pro (https://f.mtr.cool/qcvqgpxoiz I hated how FB restricts buying and selling birds, and how eBay handles hatching eggs, so I built Poultry Auctions (https://f.mtr.cool/imxpsapriv I wanted my virtual competitions to be organized and accessible, so I built the Virtual Show platform (https://f.mtr.cool/jygujeanui

Most of them started with me saying, "There has to be a better way to do this." Not all of them worked, and some still are getting fine-tuned, but I'd much rather build these things and learn than sit around and waste time hoping others would.

It's been a busy year and it's only June, but it's exciting to watch these ideas slowly become real.

I was thinking today about how almost every opportunity I've had in agriculture started because someone took a chance on me. My livestock judging coach, Mrs. Giese, let the poultry girl jump in for a practice, then a competition. The first county fair I went to, the superintendent, Jeremy Trost, answered so many silly questions that I just didn't know. On the lab farm, my boss spent hours teaching me how to properly move cattle, drive a skid steer, and so much more. My professors pulled me into classes and clubs to give me more opportunities then I could have dreamed of.

Now I'm building Pips 'n Chicks, working as an engineer, and trying to create opportunities for other people in agriculture. It's a lot of work, but I hope years from now someone says they got started because of something we built.

So let's spread the love a little bit. Who is the person that had the biggest impact on your livestock journey?

Can I ask a small favor? Our new Pips 'n Chicks Auctions representatives have been creating example auctions so they can learn the system, answer questions from sellers, and help walk new users through the bidding process.

Rather than using fake bids behind the scenes, we thought it would be more fun to let everyone practice. If you've never bid on one of our auctions before, now is the perfect time. Go to https://poultryauction.co/ , Place a few bids, watch how the system works, get outbid by your friends, and see how everything functions from a bidder's perspective. The example auctions will be voided when they end, so no payments or shipping will be required.

It also helps our reps gain experience and confidence before they're assisting customers with real listings!

Who's going to claim the winning bid on the practice auctions?

Over the past few years, I've hosted virtual poultry shows through Pips 'n Chicks with more than 3,000 entries from exhibitors across the country. Now I'd like to try something new. I'm excited to introduce the first Pips 'n Chicks Virtual Livestock Jackpot, starting with a commercial ewe show!

The format is simple. Each entry consists of a side profile of the sheep, a top view, and a short video of the sheep walking (on a halter, by hand, or in a pen). Similar to what you would take for online sales.

The show is open to all ages and all locations. Whether you're a junior exhibitor, an old-time breeder, or anywhere in between, you're welcome to enter, get feedback on your lambs, and bring home the payouts. Professional photographers or with an iPhone, it all goes. No need to worry about hauling animals, counting fuel bills, finding hotels or taking time off work.

Entries are open now, and judging will be live on August 9th for anyone to watch. Checks will be mailed afterwards to class winners. Entries must be submitted through the virtual show site at https://virtuallivestockshows.com/show/19

It's the first one for large livestock, I'm excited to learn and see where it goes!
