Hope Haven Farm Sanctuary

Hope Haven Farm Sanctuary My name is Karen Phillips, and I’m the founder of Hope Haven Farm Sanctuary. Each one of us has the power to make a difference.

Hope Haven Farm Sanctuary is a nonprofit animal sanctuary and rescue near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that gives neglected and abused farm animals a safe, loving and lifelong home. 🐴🦙🐷🐐🐓🦃🐶🐈 Over 10 years ago now, I was working as a veterinarian at a busy animal shelter when a potbelly piglet was brought in as a stray. It broke my heart to see this innocent little animal, Isaac, who had been abandone

d by his owner and then “saved” at a shelter, now tremble and cower in the back of a cement stall, while an aggressive dog barked in the adjacent kennel. That was the day I committed myself to the goal of starting and running a farm animal sanctuary: a place where neglected and unwanted farm animals could feel safe and loved. Now, a decade later, Hope Haven does exactly that, providing a safe and loving forever home to a wide range of farm animals — from pigs, goats, chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys to horses, mini-donkeys, alpacas, emus and peacocks. (It’s definitely a lively crew!)

Creating and running this sanctuary has been the most difficult and most rewarding adventure of my life. It’s also taught me an invaluable lesson: that each of us has the power to create positivity and good in the world if we choose to do so. From the personal choices we make to the causes we support, each one of us has the ability to make life better for the farm animals that share our planet. If you feel moved to contribute to our work here at Hope Haven, we would be most grateful for your support. There’s something incredibly peaceful about spending time in nature with animals. 🌿💚

Research has shown that spending time in nature can help lower stress, reduce blood pressure, improve mood, boost focus, and even support a healthier immune system. Add animals to the mix, and the benefits are even greater.

This weekend, give yourself permission to unplug for a little while. Take a walk through a park, sit under a tree, visit an animal sanctuary (wink, wink), or simply spend a few quiet moments outdoors. Your mind, body, and soul will thank you.

Where is your favorite place to reconnect with nature? 🌳🐴🐐

💙 Thankful Thursday 💙

Friends!! We are trying to rescue these alpaca from the auction pipeline where they have been subjected to frequent transport and constant uncertainty. We have a wonderful alpaca herd waiting to welcome them and we want to give them the safe, loving, stable, forever home they deserve here at the Sanctuary.

We're hoping to raise funds to cover their intake into the sanctuary, including transportation, quarantine, shearing, veterinary care, deworming, vaccinations, and all of the care needed to help them settle in safely and comfortably.

Our hope is to keep these friends together and give them both the opportunity to begin their next chapter at Hope Haven. If you'd like to help us make this possible, please consider making a donation today. Every dollar helps provide the care and support needed to welcome these alpacas home.

One of the many perks of having goats at Hope Haven… free landscaping help! 🌿🐐

Any time we’re trimming trees, clearing brush, or cutting down branches, our goat herd is the first to volunteer. Fresh leaves are one of their favorite treats, and they make quick work of helping us “clean up” the property.
Who needs a landscaping crew when you have goats? ❤️🐐

💛🌿 Be Kind to Every Kind 🌿💛

This is one of the most beautiful times of year in Pennsylvania. Hiking wooded trails, enjoying gardens, listening to birdsong, and sharing outdoor spaces with wildlife is the best.

At Hope Haven, we believe kindness should extend to every kind—farm animals, wildlife, and all the creatures who share this world with us.

Inspired by Pittsburgh’s beloved Fred Rogers and his message of compassion, our Be Kind to Every Kind Raffle Basket is filled with woodland-themed treasures, including a $50 Visa gift card, Scentsy Buddy, hedgehog goodies, coffee and tea treats, insulated drinkware, a cozy fox and owl blanket, and more!

🎟 Tickets are just $5 each
📅 Winner drawn June 14 and must be able to pick basket up at the farm.

Every ticket helps provide food, shelter, and medical care for the rescued farm animals who call Hope Haven home.

At Hope Haven, we believe that sanctuary isn’t just for the animals we rescue—it’s also a place where wildlife is welcome.

Our resident red-eared slider turtle has made himself right at home in the duck pond, often sharing sunny afternoons with the geese and ducks as if he’s always been part of the family. 🐢🦆

One of the things we love most about Hope Haven is watching these unexpected friendships and peaceful moments unfold.

Creating habitat, protecting green spaces, and allowing nature to thrive alongside our rescued animals is an important part of our mission. The pond may have been built for the ducks, but it’s become a home for wild visitors as well—and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

❤️ Because kindness doesn’t stop at the fence line.

Rigby came to Hope Haven more than 10 years ago after the farmer who was raising him for meat fell on hard times, lost his farm, and needed to find homes for his animals.

What nobody could have known then was that this bronze-eyed little emu would become one of the heartbeats of the sanctuary.

Over the years, Rigby has been an entertainer, a comedian, a snack smuggler, a troublemaker, a teacher, and a friend to thousands of visitors. He has made people laugh, made people think, and helped countless guests see farm animals in a whole new way.

Simply put, Rigby IS Hope Haven.

What a wonderful afternoon! ☀️🐷🐾

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by the Hope Haven table today and visited with me, farm dog Fig, Alexis, and Dawn. We had an absolutely fantastic time and are so grateful for all the support.

Special thanks to Kristy and everyone at Big Sewickley Creek Brewery for hosting this fun event and helping us raise AN INCREDIBLE $1,030 FOR THE ANIMALS!

The weather was perfect, the music by Kevin Latshaw was wonderful, and had so many beautiful pieces on display. I was even gifted these adorable piggy earrings, which I absolutely love! 🐷💕

Of course, we can’t forget our “Vote for Your Favorite Haven Animal” contest! The clear winner by a landslide was Achoo the farm hog. 🏆🐽
Twyla the alpaca proudly claimed second place, while Butters, the goats, Wynona the turkey, and Seymour the rooster were all pretty much tied for third. It was such a fun addition to an already amazing day!
Thanks everyone!!
