Did you know that pets grow their winter coats based on sunlight, not temperature?
You might think that pets start shedding their summer coats because of the drop in temperatures, but it actually is because of sunlight! As the days get shorter in the fall, the decrease in daylight hours stimulates a pet's brain to produce more melatonin.
This hormonal change acts like a "biological clock" by signaling the body to shed lighter summer fur and grow in the dense, insulating undercoat for the upcoming colder weather!
