Dog training in the greater DMV, Training Tip Tuesday: recall is not a party trick, it is a safety skill. 🐾

A dog who comes when called can enjoy more freedom, more safely. A dog who only comes when there is nothing better going on is one squirrel away from trouble.

How to build a recall worth trusting:
1. Start indoors or in a quiet yard, where you are the most interesting thing
2. Say your recall word once, then reward like you mean it
3. Practice on a long line outdoors before you ever trust it off leash
4. Never call your dog to you for something they hate, like a bath or the end of play. Go get them instead
5. Keep sessions short and fun, and end while they are still winning

Recall is built in layers. Train it before you need it.

Augie is a reactive shepherd mix, and this morning he walked in for his boarding stay like he owns the place. That is not by accident. My home is set up with reactive dogs in mind. Dogs who have received training have the privilege of accessing this safe space for boarding when owners are away.

This is what I want reactive-dog owners to know. Boarding can be a safe, quiet place to stay, with handling that keeps their good habits intact.

Teach your dog to do NOTHING. Yes, really. 😌

The "place" command — sending your dog to a bed or mat to settle — is one of the most useful skills a dog can learn. Doorbell rings? Place. Cooking dinner? Place. Guests over? Place.

How to start:
1️⃣ Lure your dog onto a bed or mat, then reward
2️⃣ Add the word "place" as they're stepping on
3️⃣ Build duration — reward calm settling, not just standing there
4️⃣ Add distance and distractions slowly

A dog who can settle on cue is a dog you can take anywhere. 🐾
