🌿 Field Dressing and Caping: Essential Tips for a Stunning Taxidermy Result 🦌πŸ”ͺ

At Ness Taxidermy, LLC in Seven Valleys, PA, we're committed to preserving the beauty of your hunting trophies through meticulous taxidermy artistry. To ensure the best results, proper field dressing and caping are crucial steps that can make a world of difference. Here are some helpful tips to guide you:

πŸ”ͺ Field Dressing Essentials:
Proper field dressing begins immediately after harvesting your game. Here's how to do it right:

Act Quickly: Begin field dressing as soon as possible to prevent the animal's body heat from spoiling the meat.
Clean Incisions: Make clean, precise cuts to avoid damaging the underlying muscles and hide.
Gut Carefully: Open the abdominal cavity and carefully remove the entrails. Avoid puncturing the stomach or intestines to prevent contamination.
Cool Down: Place ice packs or bags of ice inside the body cavity to cool the meat quickly.

🦌 Caping for Success:
Caping is essential when preserving the hide for taxidermy. Follow these steps:

Immediate Attention: Cape the animal's hide as soon as possible after harvest to prevent hair slip.
Clean Cuts: Make a precise cut around the animal's midsection, separating the hide from the body.
Minimize Damage: Handle the hide gently to prevent tears, cuts, or dirt contamination.
Label and Freeze: Roll the hide with fur side inwards, label it with necessary information, and freeze it to preserve the quality.

So many deer heads, fish and other animals go out of here and we neglect to get good photos of them. Besides, they typically look a LOT better once they are hanging on your wall in your living room or den or office than up here at the shop.

Post your photos of your Ness Taxidermy Wildlife Art here in the comments below! We would LOVE to see them!

The first measurement you are going to take is the length of the fish. Either use your tape or lay it on a board and get the length. Now-it is important you measure the correct points in order to obtain the correct length measurement. You want to measure from the tip of the mouth to the edge of the tail.

Do not make the mistake of getting the measurement from the center of the fish tail or from the top of the fishes mouth. Most of the time on Largemouth Bass the lower jaw will extend out much further than the top. That is also why it is crucial that you close the fishes mouth when taking measurements for taxidermist.

Take a good photo

The next step to making sure that your replica mount is as close the real thing as possible. Is to make sure you take good photos. Don't stop at one photo and call it good. Find some good lighting, where the sun is behind the camera and get a good high quality image that the taxidermist can work from.

Also-Don't forget the last but most important step. A good weight of the fish. Use a certified scale if you are hoping to get an accurate reading on your trophy. Or just add a few pounds to the story and let her go!
