Penny’s first “backing” since my decision to do a complete do-over. She’s been treated for ulcers, had some physical issues addressed, and I have been helping her create new opinions of what a riding partnership looks/feels like

In the top photo, we are just getting started in our connection. She is less tense than she had been in earlier sessions, but I could still see her lack of confidence & a hint of concern.

Left bottom: After a few moments of us sharing time, she is starting to really settle in to “us”.

Middle & Right Bottom: with the assistance of my beautiful student Ellie, we were able to support her from the ground & the saddle to have the most successful, completely relaxed ride, so much so, that the very noticeable lameness in her right hind improved 90% just by relaxing her “tension” pattern that she has been carrying.

I’m over the moon excited for Penny and all of the fun we are going to have together.

The upside to riding through connection is that you have a profound relationship with your horse(s). Sharing body movements, energies, and even thoughts - that 2, quickly become 1. The relationship trumps any training aide or cue.

But the process looks different.

The majority of our horsemanship has resorted to placing a horse into a frame that is desired for APPEARANCE ALONE, but in fact has nothing to do with the actual ability to perform a task, let alone protect the horse from injury to the physical or phychy.

Instead, developing the connection is the “training”.

The quiet moments of feeling how the body responds & moves. The focus on the tiniest of ldetails of the “horse & rider Union” biomechanics. The mental/emotional state for each varying task/environment. Where is movement flowing? Where are the blocks?

Keeping both rider & horse “present” & breathing in what they are doing - with conscious effort.

Understanding that balance comes from many things. Up/down, left/right from both parties of the union - working together, as well as thought patterns. Are they in balance? How about emotional balance?

I have owned well over a 100 horses in my lifetime so far. Gotten to know the deepest details of horses’ movement, but from their viewpoint, not ours.

I have taught well over 100 people how to ride & feel their horse - I have watched hearts bloom in front of my eyes, when riders are so filled with love for the horse they are on, and what is possible when you ride with that as your guide.

The sky becomes the limit.

Here’s to living every minute of every day with horses!!!

Understanding your horse’s posture is one of the biggest tools in the tool box.

When a horse is stuck in the fight/flight nervous system, breath holding is their “normal”, creating tension & disconnection with their own body.

You cannot train a horse, that is not “in their body”.

This is my now 4 yr old gelding that had a traumatic experience in a horse trailer on his way to me as a yearling.

It took some extra time, lots of questions to determin the true state he was experiencing, and what I could do to supportort him in his healing back to wholeness

Was this a physical condition ?

Yes, but the true origin of the problem was from the emotional/spiritual part of him - the NERVOUS SYSTEM, which is directly regulated by how they view their world

If you don’t support ALL of the horse, you will never achieve balance & you cannot build anything that is out of balance.

Once in a while, I have to take a really big step back to really identify what is being presented to me, by my horse.

Is this a “hole” in training?
A missed step (or several)?
A just plain crazy horse?
Or is this the result of training a horse when it is not breathing?

If your horse is not relaxed enough to be breathing normally, you are building somethinging with no foundation. No confidence, but lots of hi-drive reactions.

Paterning them to react quicklyy, making them desperate
to find the right answer for relief, or to avoid correction does not build connection to the rider, but rather connection to anticipation of something uncomfortable.

Your horse’s posture can quickly tell you where they are at, in their body how they are feeling and/or understand things

Calm, confident?
Trepidation, anticipation?

When interacting with your horse, what is the "volume" of your conversation?

I have instructed so many children in riding, respecting, and loving horses.

My primary focus has always been helping them to understand that the dialogue between rider & horse can be the most subtle whisper.

When this becomes the default approach, the horse “leans in” to listen, and vise versa; each “listening” for the slightest shift, the slightest thought, & the slightest protective feeling.

The horse & rider develop this delicate 2-way language where true connection happens & magic is created.
