Punkin may be tiny, but this little Frenchie has been incredibly brave 💚🐾

Like many flat-faced breeds, Punkin has Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), meaning her shortened skull anatomy makes breathing much harder than it should be. She recently underwent a soft palate resection to remove excess tissue blocking her airway and help improve airflow. (Punkin did not receive nares surgery.)

After surgery, Punkin experienced significant upper airway swelling and respiratory distress during recovery. While she was still able to breathe, she was showing increased respiratory effort and discomfort. To help keep her airway safe while the swelling improved, a temporary tracheostomy tube was placed directly into her trachea, creating an alternate airway for her to breathe through.
Punkin was also regurgitating after surgery, which increased her risk for aspiration pneumonia — a serious condition where stomach contents can enter the lungs. To help reduce this risk, we placed a nasogastric (NG) tube through her nose into her stomach to remove bile and excess stomach contents while her airway and GI tract settled down. The tube was secured with finger-trap sutures and was removed once she felt comfortable enough to eat on her own again 💚

Punkin has required around-the-clock monitoring, nebulization treatments to help loosen secretions, regular trach suctioning/cleaning, and lots of dedicated nursing care from her Oakhurst family.

The good news? Punkin is doing great and is expected to have her temporary trach removed soon 🎉

Frenchies are lovable, goofy companions, but loud breathing, snoring, gagging, overheating easily, or struggling to recover after activity are not always “normal for the breed.” Sometimes improving airflow can truly change a dog’s quality of life 💨🐶

Please send Punkin lots of love as she continues healing with her Oakhurst family 💚

☀️ Warm weather is finally here… which means we have a couple questions for our pet parents 🐱💚

Have you started noticing:
🦟 Mosquitoes buzzing around?
🐜 Ants sneaking inside?
🪰 Those annoying little gnats showing up everywhere?
Well… if THEY’RE finding their way indoors, parasites can too 👀

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is:
“My kitty is indoor only, so they don’t need prevention.”
But here’s the truth — indoor cats are STILL at risk for:
✔️ Fleas
✔️ Heartworms
✔️ Intestinal parasites
✔️ Ticks
Even cats that only sit on screened patios, sunbathe by open doors, or never step paw outside can still be exposed. Mosquitoes carrying heartworm disease can easily make their way indoors, and fleas are expert hitchhikers 🦟🐾

That’s why we highly recommend NexGard® COMBO for our feline friends 💚
It’s a simple monthly topical applied between the shoulder blades that helps protect your kitty from fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites, AND heartworm disease — all in one easy dose.

✨ BONUS ✨
Purchase 12 months of prevention through our hospital and receive an instant rebate of $65 OFF! Plus… you get an excuse to stop by and say hi to your favorite Oakhurst team 😸🐾

When Jerry was told to wait until he could have his treat… yeah, his face says everything 😂🐶🧀

Those first puppy (and kitten!) visits are a BIG deal—and we want them to be as positive as possible. That’s why we use lots of distractions (aka snacks 🧀) during their first round of vaccines. It helps turn a potentially scary moment into something way less stressful—and sets them up for confident, happy vet visits in the future 💚🐾

Got a tiny little baby like Jerry? We totally get it—sometimes splitting up vaccines into smaller visits can make things easier on them, and that’s absolutely okay! We’re all about meeting your pet where they’re at and creating the best experience possible.

Because good visits now = less anxiety later 🐾💚

Tell us… are you having as much fun as Margo today? 😄🐾✨

Just a friendly reminder for your week ahead:
Don’t forget — tomorrow, Monday the 11th, we’ll be closing at 6 PM instead of 8 PM.

We’ll be back to our normal late Monday hours after that, making evenings a little easier for you! 🕗🐾

Ever notice how your pet is limping, coughing, or acting “off”… and then the second you walk into the vet, they’re suddenly totally fine? 👀🐾

Trust us—you’re not imagining things, and your pet definitely isn’t trying to make you look silly. This happens all the time.

Here’s what’s really going on:
That car ride, new environment, unfamiliar smells, and even a little nervous energy can trigger a rush of adrenaline. And just like in people, adrenaline can temporarily mask pain or symptoms. So your pet might seem “all better” in the moment… but that doesn’t mean the underlying issue is gone.

That limp, that cough, that change you noticed at home? It’s still important—and it’s exactly why we’re here. 💚

Pro tip: If you can, take a quick video of what you’re seeing at home. It helps us get the full picture and make the best plan for your pet.

Because you know your pet best—and when something feels off, it’s always worth checking out 🐾

What does arthritis actually look like in your pet? 🐾💚
It’s not always obvious—and it doesn’t just mean “getting old.” Arthritis can show up in subtle ways that are easy to miss at first.

Signs to watch for:
✔️ Slowing down on walks or lagging behind
✔️ Stiffness, especially after resting or first thing in the morning
✔️ Hesitation to jump on/off furniture or into the car
✔️ Limping or favoring a leg (sometimes on and off)
✔️ Licking or chewing at joints
✔️ Behavioral changes—grumpy, withdrawn, or less playful

In the X-ray we’re sharing, you can see changes in the joints of this pup’s paws consistent with arthritis. She was also born with a small deformity in the area, which can change how weight is distributed over time—putting extra stress on certain joints and speeding up wear and tear.
The good news? There are so many ways we can help keep your pet comfortable and moving 💚

✨ Joint supplements like glucosamine can support cartilage health and help slow progression
✨ Anti-inflammatory support (when needed) can reduce pain and swelling
✨ Weight management plays a HUGE role in joint health
✨ And one of our favorites—cold laser therapy

Our Companion Animal Laser is a non-invasive, drug-free option that:
✔️ Reduces pain and inflammation
✔️ Improves circulation
✔️ Promotes healing at the cellular level
✔️ Helps pets move more comfortably—especially those with arthritis or recovering from injury

Arthritis may be common, but that doesn’t mean your pet has to live in discomfort. Early support makes a big difference in their quality of life 🐾
If you’re noticing any of these signs, let’s talk—our team can help create a plan tailored just for your pet 💚 Call us, text us through PetDesk, or schedule online anytime.
