Today is National "Therapy Animal Appreciation" Day! So I thought I would introduce you to a couple of the therapy dogs we have as patients!

Click on the pictures below to learn a bit about each kiddo! 🥰
-------------------------------------------------------------

Did you know that animals being used for therapy services for physical and mental health can be traced back to the 1600s? Horses were amongst the first animals to be used to improve patients health.

In 1940, the American Red Cross introduced the use of farm animals to treat PTSD in war veterans. It's said that caring for the animals helped take their minds off their triggers.

Scientists began to look into the research behind animal therapy. By 1960, Dr. Boris Levinson was the first to document the positive impact dogs had on patient's overall general health.

Now, research is a lot further along and 74% of owners stated that their pet improved their mental health. 🫂

If you're interested in getting your dog started with therapy services, there are a lot of resources around us. You can reach out to LoveOnALeash, SpecialK9 or CanineGoodCitizen like these kiddos.

If you have a pet that is in therapy services, let us know about them below! 💛

Today is "World Parvo Awareness" Day!
That means I'm here to educate you about the dangers of Parvovirus.

Here are some facts about this DEADLY virus that you may not know:

1.) An estimated 20% of dog owners do NOT know what Parvovirus is.
2.) "Parvo season" is in the early spring to mid summer.
3.) Approximately 900 dogs are diagnosed with Parvovirus EVERYDAY.
4.) Parvovirus has a mortality rate of 91% (if left untreated).
5.) An injectable Parvovirus treatment is now available.

Parvovirus is directly linked with dog p**p - the bacteria from the p**p soaks into the soil and can live there for years with the potential of infecting another puppy.

If you suspect your pet is exhibiting signs of Parvovirus, its IMPERATIVE that you speak with a veterinarian as soon as possible.
Early intervention can save lives.

Parvo is a dangerously frightening virus, but knowing how you can protect your pup can make things seem a little less daunting. 💛

Did you know that April is "National Prevention of Lyme Disease in Dogs" Month?🐾

As we finish out the month, the days are getting warmer and more and more dogs are tagging along with their people; hitting the trails, on camping trips to the lake, etc.

Unfortunately, these are the perfect areas and conditions for ticks.

These tiny bloodsuckers can transmit various diseases to both humans and animals through their bites, including Lyme disease - and it doesn't need to be very warm for them to come out looking for a treat.

Preventing Lyme Disease begins with a forward approach! Here’s how you can help keep your dog safe:
✔️ Use year-round tick prevention (consult your veterinarian on what would be a good fit for you!)
✔️ Perform daily tick checks—especially after outdoor adventures
✔️ Get your pup routinely groomed.
✔️ Keep your yard maintained and tree limbs trimmed.

A few simple steps can make a big difference in keeping your furry friend healthy & happy! 🐶💛

**Dr. Jacob does provide a "combination test " that includes: annual testing for heartworms, as well as 3 tick-borne illnesses, to reflect the increasing need to check for both diseases from mosquitoes, as well as diseases caused by ticks.**

Transmitted through tick bites, Lyme disease can be hard to detect and cause serious, recurring health issues. It's best to prevent it by preventing tick bites.

"Not all lost dogs are strays." An estimated 𝟒 𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐎𝐍 dogs go missing every year in the United States.

Today is "National Lost Dog Awareness Day!"

Losing an animal can feel heartbreaking, but knowing what preventative steps to take can make all the difference.

The 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧 preventative measure you can make for your pet is placing a microchip at your local vet clinic.
𝘈 𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘳, 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘱𝘦𝘵’𝘴 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘯. 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘢 𝘷𝘦𝘵, 𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘮𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘢 𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘦 𝘐𝘋 𝘯𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘭.

𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗕𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝗔𝗜𝗗: A microchip is only effective if you make sure that it is properly registered to you with your accurate, up-to-date information.

If your pet goes missing, it's easy to want to panic; Don't worry, there are still immediate actions you can take!

• 𝐑𝐄𝐈𝐍𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐂𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐒𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐓!
Place your pets bedding, food bowl or clothing that smells like you outside your house to lure your animals to a familiar place.

• 𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐂𝐄𝐒!
Contact your local animal control, vet clinics, and shelters so they can keep an eye out for your pet - recruit family/friends to help you look.

• 𝐆𝐄𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐃 𝐎𝐔𝐓!
Print flyers, talk with neighbors, post on lost dog pages, etc.

★ → We have a microchip scanner here at the Sedgwick Vet Clinic, if you think you have found a lost pet, you can always come up and have us scan for one!

If you do find a lost animal and are unable to get to a vet, or unable to temporarily hold it, contact your local animal control so they can point you in the right direction to reunite the pet with their owners.
