It’s nice that they closed this beach due to giardia. Seattle does not do this, so always be aware that your dog may be picking up this diarrhea causing organism at dog parks and other popular dog locations.

Update April 10, 2026: We anticipate reopening the dog park the week of April 20 after more wood chips are added.

The dog park at Juanita Beach Park is temporarily closed following recent reports of dogs contracting giardia.

Out of an abundance of caution, we are following guidance from the CDC and will reopen the park once we’ve had enough warm, dry weather to fully dry out the wood chips and soil.

We know this is a favorite spot for many and appreciate your patience as we take this step to help protect the health of pets in our community.

Washington State, that previously had low numbers of Heartworm cases is showing increased numbers of infected dogs. As you can imagine, this is a fatal disease if left untreated, and treatment is harsh and costly.
Prevention with monthly medication is the best course of action. I normally recommend Simparica Trio for dogs and Revolution for cats because these products also kill other parasites such as fleas and worms.
