Would you sit beside a lonely shelter dog just so they felt noticed?

He was in a pit bull rescue and was being severely abused by the other dogs. An online post stated if the pup was not adopted immediately, they had no choice but to euthanize him. Lack of funds, space, and temperament did not allow him to stay where he was.

We took the pup that day. He was in poor shape, gnarled coat, skinny, and hyperactive. Never closed his eyes when anyone or anything was nearby. Winning his love and trust was a constant job.

That was four years ago...

When I saw a newspaper ad offering a female Saint Bernard to a good home, I made an appointment. The dog’s name was Rose. Her owner had abandoned her, moved away, and called his girlfriend telling her to get rid of the dog, he didn’t want her anymore. Rose had been given away five times already and was brought back within a week each time because nobody could handle her.

When I met Rose, she rolled over, clearly asking me to pet her. But when I reached for her, she barked hysterically and rolled back onto her belly. She wagged her tail but watched me all the time. She gave off such mixed signals, I knew she had been abused. Pet me, pet me, but don’t touch me! I petted her head and she rolled over again. I moved slowly and touched her gently, talking to her all the time. The girlfriend said she was surprised Rose let me near her. Her owner was a big man and thought it made him more macho to beat on a big dog. I decided Rose would not be coming back to that house.

Beast came into Animal Care League as a local stray in November of 2019 along with his sister Belle. These two silly siblings were typical teenage pups and though they loved each other, they were not required to be adopted together. Eventually Belle found her forever home, but Beast was still waiting. We decided that Beast deserved a break from the shelter and a potential foster family was found.

When the potential foster family first met Beast, we warned them that the meeting might not go so well. Beast could be wild, uncomfortable with strangers upon first meeting them, and was particularly uncomfortable with men. We advised the fosters not to look him in the eye and to quickly give him treats as they walked alongside him. That first meeting, they tried petting Beast, but he snapped his mouth shut and warned that he wasn’t yet comfortable.

We hoped the second meeting would go better. Unfortunayley...

My husband and I had just moved to Michigan, and he expressed the desire to get a dog. We saw an ad in the paper for a "free dog to a good home". We went to check on the dog and found a beautiful black lab mix named Jessie.

She was 2 years old and had lived her entire life in an outdoor pen because her people didn't believe in dogs in the house. They said they wanted to get more cats, so they had to get rid of Jessie. We were charmed with how sweet she was and agreed to take her.

It was obvious when we got her home that she had never lived in a house before. It took almost two years before she would get up on any furniture. She now has her own love seat that she loves to sleep on. However, we almost lost her a few weeks after bringing her home because it turned out she was heartworm positive, and it was a bad case.

It became apparent why they wanted to get rid of her; she was sick. There was no question that we would try to take care of it. We joke that our "free" dog immediately cost us $500, but it was the best money ever spent. Except for getting winded easily, she made a full recovery.

Jessie is the most loving dog and mothers all of our other fur babies. We can only imagine what she went through the first two years of her life (she is terrified of 4-wheelers), but the love she has given us for the last 12 years has been immeasurable.

Jessie takes joy in so many things. She loves playing in the snow (she will just stand outside and come back in covered in snow), snuggling in the recliner with her daddy, and playing with our other dog, Tuxie.

Jessie now has a frosty face, and we joke that she is trying to become a white lab. She is our sweetheart, and we are so glad she came to join our lives.
