Last month 2/2 we said goodbye to Daisy who passed away peacefully in the early morning. A gentle giant New Zealand white 2with ruby eyes, she played companion and nurse to Pika, Violet, Elvis, Diego, and even the ornery Flower and Ricochet. Hadrian the Humper missed out. She had been slowly going down hill the past six months as arthritis set in and she could no longer stand. But boy could she crawl around and make trouble. She had a great appetite until the last day. She was a lab rescue and even there they recognized how special she was. We miss you big girl! 🐰

Finally got a new turntable to replace the one my brother unapologetically destroyed. Built a pull-out shelf since I had never planned on a turntable when I designed the original cabinetry. Hit and Madyson helped me select a turntable (price/direct/manual/USB). Hooked it all up and played the first LP (Ktel!) I owned. Some initial issues were quickly resolved with a call and then we were back to the analog world. Even the skips were happy moments!

I figure I bought this grinder when I was laid off during the Great Recession ~ 2009/10. It was a pricey model then, but it has lasted and done a fine job. Baratza makes it easy to make your own repairs and upgrades, which I have done three times. Here I am replacing the calibration wheel—took me a while to figure out why my espresso and was getting worse. They have great videos, support, and sustainability commitment. And based here in Pike Place Market!

Remember the kids game of Spot the Difference illustrations? Here is the adult version with online shopping. All slight variations in text from the same seller for the same model (but actually not). Dimensions were sometimes given for the packaging and other times the scale itself. Sometimes inches and sometimes in metric. Sometimes in kanji! The answer was to get three and compare in person. But I was able to measure my portafilter at the on Cap Hill with electronic calipers! Such a great resource for those tools you need once every ten years. I’ve donated so many items in the past but never needed to borrow. And it was so busy Saturday morning and buzzing with activity. Time to clear the garage and give some tools a new home!

A CD that changed my life. This captivated me like few albums ever have. An Oz clothing shop owner played it and got me hooked. Went back to college with me, grad school and a half dozen jobs. First set had “cd deterioration” and would not play. Yesterday, I pulled it out after a decade of playing just ripped mp3s. The box fell apart, and the foam inserts had adhered to the CDs. And the text from the front is visible on the back side of the cds! But the music was crisp and clear and so full. And then it started making pop and hiss noises. Anxiously I popped it disk 3 to hear the chorus of diablos—it wouldn’t play at all! Second set of this recording that has deteriorated. No other cd has done this for me. Makes me want to listen to EMI

More on friend’s post mortem clean up. We rehomed these commemorative 22kt gold-plated Craftsman tools to BF. As we expected, he was overjoyed at this gift that we all joked was practical and fabulous at the same time 🤣. A place of honor in any man cave or as ad hoc necklace. Touchingly, he said that he hopes people find recipients for his stuff that love it as much as he does. It took my most gentle silver polish (Blitz) to clear the thick dusty grime away.

I’ve spent the past two months being a coffee nerd. We cleared a friend’s condo, who was a real coffee geek and a bit of a hoarder. Amongst all the junk I found this small stainless funnel or stand. Despite multiple searches, nothing sounded reasonable for its use. And then one day while making a Chemex pot, it dawned on me that this is a holder for used filters to drain. Grounds go into the garden, and the filter goes to the yard waste. Chemex even sold a handblown glass for this job in the fifties. Other items we salvaged were vintage Chemex kettles, carafes, and four MCM coffee makers, and hand grinders. And now to buy a timer/scale and new group for the lever espresso machine…

17 years ago Tilbert hopped into my life and changed it, from my diet to my garden and even travel. Not to mention home furnishing and embracing bite holes in clothes. I miss you little guy!
