As one of the first large-scale public food forests, this garden has captured the imaginations of people all around the world with visions of how communities can come tog

ether in urban places to grow food and revitalize the landscape with community gardening. The Beacon Food Forest celebrates growing food for the benefit of all species, providing educational opportunities, fostering and serving a diverse community, improving public health by regenerating public land, reducing agricultural climate impact, and improving local food security.

*** History of the project
This project is a significant grassroots effort, initiated and driven by community members. A group of friends and neighbors initiated the idea of a food forest in this location. With funds from Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, the group launched a community design process and invited neighbors and food forest enthusiasts from around the region to participate. Hundreds of people have participated in all aspects of its vision, design, and construction. Hundreds more participated in work parties to build the food forest with tasks ranging from spreading woodchips to installing a water system. Community volunteers are responsible for ongoing stewardship and maintenance of the garden.

*** What is a food forest? A Food Forest is a gardening technique or land management system that mimics a woodland ecosystem but substitutes in edible trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals. Fruit and nut trees are the upper level, while below are berry shrubs, edible perennials and annuals. Companions or beneficial plants are included to attract insects for natural pest management while some plants are soil amenders providing nitrogen and mulch. Together they create relationships to form a forest garden ecosystem able to produce high yields of food with less maintenance.

Calling all fruit tree enthusiasts!🍊🍋🥭🍎🍇

Come learn about fruit tree pruning from 9am-2pm on Saturday February 28th at BFF. Find out best practices for winter pruning of apples, mulberries, pears, persimmons, nut trees, figs and more!🍐

Each year we give our trees a much needed haircut so that they continue to grow and thrive and provide delicious free fruit to all.

This is a free workshop at the forest with experienced arborists who will guide volunteers through pruning techniques. All are welcome, no prior experience or registration required!

9am: Meet at the Food Forest Gathering Plaza for coffee and pastries. Core volunteer Will Rak will give a pruning basics overview. Handouts will be shared and the group will discuss best practices.

10am-1pm: Breakout groups will form and move off into the forest for work on specific fruits/areas.

1-2pm: Clean-up of debris and tool storage. Final walk through of the site to inspect work done by all groups.
Snack packs available for munching.

What to Bring: Water and weather appropriate clothing.
🌦️Also please bring gloves, pruners, hand saws or any other tree trimming equipment you may have. We will have some of these tools available, but probably not enough for all. Lysol disinfectant spray is also recommended for cleaning tools between trees.

This Giving Season, we’re asking our community to help keep the Beacon Food Forest growing. 🌱

We’re a small, volunteer-led, grassroots organization, and our work is funded directly by community support. This year, that support helped us:
• Donate 700+ lbs of fresh food to local food banks
• Expand our Food Bank Plot to 3x its previous size
* Start a Young Person’s Garden for kids & youth
• Begin building 12 new P-Patch plots, including 2 ADA-accessible ones
• Shift all our classes to fully FREE community education
• Improve accessibility with new gravel paths & ADA toolshed work

And there’s so much more we want to do next year — but we can’t do it without you.

If you believe in free food on public land, accessible green space, and community-led food justice, please consider donating today. Every dollar helps us buy tools, compost, plants, workshop supplies, and everything needed to keep this place thriving.

Thank you for being a part of the Beacon Food Forest ~ Donate at the link in our bio today!

Dear Community,
Here at Beacon Food Forest, the end of the year has us reflecting on all the huge accomplishments we've undertaken this year. Here are just a few that come to mind:

- Hiring a new Site & Programs Director
- Expanding the Food Bank Plot to three times last year's size
- Donating over 700 lbs of food to local food banks!
- Wall construction and gravel compaction around the ADA toolshed and education circle
- Hiring a part time Grants & Fundraising Coordinator
- Starting construction on 12 new p-patches, including 2 ADA accessible garden plots
- Switching our education model from paid workshops, to free community classes!

All these changes are huge and exciting, and will bring untold benefits to the community. However, they also require funds and support to continue. If you believe in the work we're doing to promote food justice, land reciprocity, and urban reforestation then please consider bidding in our end of year fundraiser and Auction. Each of these items were thoughtfully donated by members of our community, and all proceeds go directly to growing and improving the Food Forest!
