I'm judging some of the classes in the next virtual ILHA show over July 17-19! Follow the link in the post below to learn the patterns and prepare your entries!
Why do patterns matter in liberty competition?
At first glance, a liberty pattern might look like a simple course to follow. In reality, it's what helps transform liberty from a beautiful expression of partnership into a measurable, teachable discipline.
Patterns create consistency. Every competitor is asked to complete the same elements, allowing judges to evaluate communication, precision, willingness, responsiveness, and the quality of the horse-handler partnership on an equal playing field.
Rather than limiting creativity, patterns provide a foundation. They encourage competitors to develop the essential skills that build confidence and communication before advancing into more complex liberty work.
Whether you're new to liberty or preparing for championship competition, practicing patterns helps you:
• Build clear communication with your horse
• Improve consistency and accuracy
• Understand what judges are evaluating
• Track your progress over time
• Develop the fundamentals that support every successful liberty partnership
At ILHA, our goal is to promote liberty as both an art and a discipline. Patterns help preserve fairness while encouraging horsemen and women to continue growing their skills with every ride, and every release.
Curious about what you'll be asked to perform? Explore our class patterns and see how each one is designed to help you and your horse succeed.
