On this day two years ago, the City of Seattle destroyed the Black Lives Memorial Garden. Directed by Bruce Harrell, the city spent $89,000 to destroy the land where people came together for three years not only to build a garden, but to begin to dream of a world free from oppression. The lessons learned from this experiment still continue to ripple forward in time as we seek to struggle against more blatant manifestations of fascism. Let us not forget what the state will do to silence us. Let us continue to reflect on the commonalities of our diverse struggles so that we can unite and rise up together to end exploitation and restore our connection to the land.

❤️‍🔥 A few of us participated in recent trip to Brazil and plan to share about their trip, especially about the similarities and differences in the conditions of resistance. We will also share song, music, and cultural stories that we have learned.

BSF Update: Second Sunday May 11 🦋💐

TLDR: No big event vibes, we won’t be playing host this month 💕 See ya in June 😎

Spring has sprung 🥳 And that means we’ve got a lot of land tending to do! We have decided to honor our capacity and the needs of the garden by not hosting a public gathering this month. Our next public gathering will be Sunday June 8th.

We will still be tending the land per usual! This week we will work on the many tasks that need to get done so the garden can flourish this season. Tasks we are working on include laying irrigation lines, transplanting our spring starts, succession seeding, trellis building for beans and peas & planting beans, preparing our milpa beds & blessing and seeding our corn, and direct seeding squash sisters alongside the corn.

Next week we will plant more milpa crops (solanaceae fam) as we wait for our beans to go in after our corn are at least six inches tall.

TOPIC: Destruction of the Land is Destruction of the People: Ecocide and the Migrant Crisis

🦋 Our topic for conversation will be Destruction of the Land is Destruction of the People: Ecocide and the Migrant Crisis. This is inspired from our last month’s dialogue from the seed swap, where we discussed the extraction of soil starting materials like peat moss, perlite, and coconut coir. Given the heightened attacks locally against our migrant relatives, we will be making connections between the migrant crisis here in Washington and the imperialist destruction of people’s ancestral homelands globally that is the ultimate cause for forced migration.
We will hear from our friends in about how migrants and allies are organizing locally to build a mass movement to defend the dignity of migrants and asylum seekers and demand the end to forced migration, deportations, and detention.

🌱 This will connect to our Garden Skillshare topic for this month - garden planning, intercropping, crop rotation; the importance of tending to the soil as we grow food to nourish our communities.

soil & seed starting skillshare PLUS seed swap was a success! thanks to all who joined us today 🥳🥰✨

🌱 we got 500+ seeds planted and everyone went home with exciting new seeds to try growing this season. A number of folks offered to bring home boxes of starts to foster through the first few early weeks before we bring them back together to up-pot at a centralized location.

🔥 Excited to be growing our network of people that can tend and hold the New Holly space together. If you live in the South End, especially around New Holly/Othello/Rainier Beach/Columbia City, plz come thru!

We are looking to build consistency and commitment to our practice of collective gardening and being organized this year and beyond. Join us! DM to get connected.

✅ VOTE YES on Prop 1A by Tuesday, Feb 11 @ 8PM! The wealthy opposition has spent over half a million to stop social housing. Vote YES and get more people into dignified housing now!

Prop 1A will generate $50 million for social housing by taxing the wealthiest businesses, which would:

✊🏽 Create permanently affordable, publicly owned social housing: Housing would be created for people, not for profit, and stay in public hands in perpetuity.

💚Add housing that meets the highest green standards: Buildings account for a significant percentage of overall greenhouse gas emissions. New social housing buildings must meet Passive House standards.

🫂 Foster mixed-income communities:  Social housing will serve households across the income spectrum, with the rents of higher income households subsidizing those of lower incomes.

👍🏽Prop 1A👍🏽 is widely endorsed by unions, climate action groups, and diverse community organizations. 👎🏽Prop 1B👎🏽 receives 82% of its funding from major corporations, and looks out for big business interests not working class and poor people. ❌Big business and real estate should not have a say in our elections‼️

Repost from : Join us for a vigil in remembrance of Robert Brooks on Saturday, January 4th at 4pm at Cal Anderson Park on the corner of 11th and Pine behind the backstop. Please bring flowers, candles, and signs (masks required).

On December 10th 43-year-old Robert Brooks died from the horrendous injuries he sustained by correctional officers at Marcy Correctional Facility in New York who beat Brooks to death while he was handcuffed.

Bodycam footage released on December 27th by NY Attorney General, Letitia James showed multiple officers smiling and joking along with medical staff, as they brutalized and ultimately murdered Brooks.

None of the 13 officers involved have been charged. 3 of which were previously accused of acts of similar violence that left one man, William Alvarez permanently disfigured and another, Adam Bauer in a wheelchair.

We cannot be silent in the face of police brutality and torture, Robert Brooks should still be alive today, he deserved better and so do countless victims of carceral violence!

Join us for a vigil at Cal Anderson Park in Seattle to remember the life of Robert Brooks and demand justice and accountability. Contact the NY State Attorney General’s office and demand the officers be held accountable: 315-864-2000.

If we learn of how the Brooks family can be directly supported during this extremely traumatizing time, we will update this post in the description.
