📢EHV Outbreak Update:

-There are still no confirmed cases in Georgia or Alabama.

- The use of EECVI or 6 month Health Certificates have been suspended nationwide. At this time we cannot issue any new EECVI’s If you already have an EECVI it will not be valid and you will need a CVI or traditional Health Certificate for traveling across state lines.

- Recommendations remains the same;
Prevent risk of exposure by limiting travel to medical necessity only. If your horses have traveled recently check temperatures daily and clean/disinfect anything that may have come into contact with outside horses.

⛔️EHV Outbreak: What You Need To Know⛔️

What is EHV?
EHV 1 and EHV 4 are strains of Equine Herpesvirus,a common DNA based virus in equine populations. These strains cause respiratory disease, abortion in pregnant mares and neurological diseases.

What are the symptoms?
Fever, coughing, Nasal discharge, lethargy, lower limb swelling, swollen lymph nodes, ataxia, Incoordination of hind limbs and conjunctivitis.

How is it transmitted?
EHV has a typical incubation period of 4-6 days. It can be transmitted from direct transmission via mucus membranes, inhalation of droplets from coughing, etc or indirect via fomites living on surfaces such as stalls, clothing, trailers, water buckets, etc.

If my horse has been vaccinated for EHV is it safe?
Vaccinating against EHV with a Flu/Rhino vaccine decreases the risk of your horse contracting the virus and reduces the severity of the disease if your horse does contract it.

What can I do to protect my horse?
Our best recommendation is to stay home for the next 5-10 days and keep your horses away from others. Anything but necessary medical travel should be put on hold. Make sure your horses are current on their vaccines, including boosters, and contact your veterinarian if they need updated. If your horse has travelled in the last week take their temperature daily and notify your veterinary team immediately if you notice any symptoms developing.

If you have any questions please contact us at 706-580-4619 and we will be happy to assist.

Part 2: Certificate of Veterinary Inspection

Referred to as a Health Certificate this is the most common type of CVI and an important tool in preventing the spread of contagious diseases and viruses. A CVI is a federally controlled document that provides identification of the horse, proof that the horse has a current coggins, the horses destination and most importantly documentation that the horse has been examined by a Accredited Veterinarian within 30 days of travel and is free from evident disease or illness. A CVI is required to haul any horse across a state line in the United States and frequently they are required by specific facilities during competitions, etc. A CVI is valid for 30 days once issued and is considered to be “round trip” meaning to your destination and back home.

To get a CVI you will need to follow these steps:

1. Approximately 1-2 weeks prior to your travel date have your horse examined by an Accredited Veterinarian👨‍⚕️.

2. You will need to have the following information available:
📆 Date of Travel
📇 Name, Address and Phone Number of
the destination.
📇 Name, Address and Phone Number of
the person hauling the horse.
📄 A current coggins that has at least 30
days left before expiration.
📸 Left side, Right side and Face
photographs of the horse.

3. The CVI will be written and signed by the Accredited Veterinarian 10 days or less from your Date of Travel.

4. Print a copy of the CVI and your horses coggins and you will be ready to hit the road with your equne companion.

Help! Im planning a trip with my equine and I was told I need a Health Certificate? Whats that and Why?

Health Certificates or Certificate of Veterinary Inspection(CVI’s) are an official document issued by an accredited Veterinarian that verify an animals health status, typically for travel or competition.

Depending on the destination of your equine you will need 1 of 3 possibles types of CVI: Domestic, International or Extended Equine Certificate of Veterinary Inspection(EECVI). Stay tuned over the next several weeks as we discuss the requirements, differences and benefits of each…
