Great work from National Police Dog Foundation in Cook County, Illinois.
Meet retired K9 Lajka, a Belgian Malinois who proudly served with the Cook County Sheriff Official in Illinois alongside his handler, Deputy Carroll.
Born in 2016 and joining the department in 2018, Lajka spent his career protecting communities, locating dangerous suspects, detecting narcotics, and assisting numerous law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, DEA, Homeland Security, and U.S. Marshals.
Throughout his remarkable career, Lajka helped recover more than $4 million in U.S. currency, hundreds of pounds of illegal narcotics, and fi****ms connected to criminal activity.
After years of dedicated service, Lajka retired in December 2025.
๐ Recently, the National Police Dog Foundation stepped in to cover Lajkaโs emergency veterinary bill.
What many people donโt realize is that retirement often means the end of financial support for a police K9.
In many departments and states, there is little to no funding available for retired K9sโ veterinary bills, medications, or ongoing medical care. These expenses often become the personal responsibility of the handlers who have already dedicated years of their lives to serving alongside their four-legged partners.
And as these K9 heroes age, their medical needs can become increasingly expensive.
Thatโs where our Foundation steps in.
These dogs have spent their lives protecting our communities, putting themselves in harmโs way, and serving without hesitation. We believe they deserve to be cared for long after their final shift.
We are honored to have helped Lajka when he needed it most, and weโre grateful to his handler for the years of service and dedication they shared.
๐Their service ends. Our commitment to them doesnโt.
