Welcome back to Meet the Species Monday!
This week's species is the Central American rattlesnake (Crotalus simus).

This large rattlesnake can be found in Central American from Mexico to Costa Rica and on the Atlantic side of Colombia. It largely inhabits semiarid dry tropical forests and scrub forests. The Latin translation for "simus" is "flat-nosed." A neonate Central American rattlesnake shares only 50% of the same venom proteome with an adult and includes more neurotoxic proteins.
Learn more here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/19863078/

ID Tips: This rattlesnake species is best distinguished by range--it does not occur in the same areas as other large rattlesnakes, separated by mountains or other geographic features. Other species that closely resemble this one would be best differentiated by scale counting. This large rattlesnake is usually bright with a striped neck and diamonds down its back.

So cool...

The Fort Worth Zoo reported the hatching of eight gharials, marking four consecutive years of successful breeding for the critically endangered crocodilian species.
The Fort Worth facility remains the only institution in North America to achieve annual gharial reproduction. The hatchlings are being cared for in secure behind-the-scenes quarters while specialists monitor their growth and early development.
