๐ŸŽฌ๐ŸŽถ Cue the creepy music...

Peanut has officially entered her "everyone has wronged me" phase. ๐Ÿ˜…

After being fitted with an E-collar, this tiny Chihuahua has been slowly making her rounds, staring suspiciously at everyone, and serving major horror movie vibes.

๐Ÿ”น Mood: Betrayed ๐Ÿ”น Trust level: 0/10 ๐Ÿ”น Appetite: Somehow still excellent ๐Ÿ”น Ability to bump into furniture: Impressive

Don't worry, Peanut is doing great! Her cone may have transformed her into the star of her own suspense film, but it's helping keep her safe while she heals. ๐Ÿ’™

We're pretty sure if tiny footsteps and dramatic sighs had a soundtrack, it would be this one. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿพ

โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Extreme Heat Alert for Pet Owners! ๐Ÿพ

With dangerously high temperatures in the forecast, it's important to remember that our pets are at risk for heat-related illnesses much faster than we are.

โš ๏ธ Pets can overheat in just minutes, even during a short walk or while spending time outdoors.

Signs of Heat Exhaustion or Heat Stroke: ๐Ÿถ Excessive panting ๐Ÿถ Drooling more than usual ๐Ÿถ Bright red gums or tongue ๐Ÿถ Weakness or stumbling ๐Ÿถ Vomiting or diarrhea ๐Ÿถ Collapse or unresponsiveness

๐Ÿ’ง Provide plenty of fresh, cool water. ๐ŸŒณ Limit outdoor activity to early morning or late evening. ๐Ÿก Keep pets indoors during the hottest part of the day. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Remember: Asphalt and concrete can burn paw pads. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their feet!

๐Ÿพ Owners of short-muzzled (brachycephalic) breeds such as Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, Shih Tzus, and Boxers should be especially cautious. These breeds already have difficulty cooling themselves through panting and can quickly develop life-threatening heat stroke, even with minimal activity.

๐Ÿš— Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle. Cracking the windows does not provide enough protection from rising temperatures.

If your pet shows any signs of overheating, move them to a cool area immediately, offer small amounts of water, and contact your veterinarian right away.

Let's work together to keep our furry family members safe, comfortable, and cool during this heat wave! โค๏ธ๐Ÿพโ˜€๏ธ

โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿพ Happy Saturday from Your Veterinary Team! ๐Ÿพโ˜€๏ธ

Weekends are a little reminder to slow down, enjoy the simple moments, and spend time with the ones who make life better. For many of us, that includes the four-legged family members who greet us at the door, follow us from room to room, and somehow always know when we need a little extra comfort.

Today, take a few extra minutes to toss the ball, enjoy a walk, share a cuddle on the couch, or simply sit outside together and soak up the sunshine.

As veterinarians, we have the privilege of seeing the incredible bond between pets and their people every day. It's a bond built on loyalty, trust, and unconditional love, and it's one of life's greatest gifts.

We hope your Saturday is filled with wagging tails, gentle purrs, wet noses, and plenty of happy memories. โค๏ธ

โš ๏ธUrinary Tract Infections (UTIs) in Dogs & Cats: What Every Pet Owner Should Know ๐Ÿšจ

A urinary tract infection occurs when bacteria enter the urinary system and cause inflammation and discomfort. UTIs can affect pets of any age, but they are more common in female dogs, senior pets, and pets with underlying health conditions.

๐Ÿพ Watch for these common symptoms: โ€ข Frequent urination โ€ข Straining to urinate โ€ข Accidents in the house or outside the litter box โ€ข Blood in the urine โ€ข Strong-smelling urine โ€ข Excessive licking of the ge***al area โ€ข Increased thirst โ€ข Signs of pain or discomfort while urinating

โš ๏ธ Important: If your pet is unable to urinate or is repeatedly straining with little to no urine produced, seek veterinary care immediately.

Early treatment can help your pet feel better faster and prevent complications. If you notice any of these signs, give us a call! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑโค๏ธ

โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿฑ Why Does Your Cat Always Find the Sunniest Spot in the House? ๐Ÿฑโ˜€๏ธ

As veterinarians, one of the most common things we see in our feline patients is their impressive ability to locate the warmest patch of sunlight available. Whether it's a window sill, a sunroom floor, or that one spot on the couch, cats seem to have a built-in solar-powered GPS!

But why do they love sunbathing so much?

๐ŸŒž It Helps Conserve Energy Cats have a naturally higher resting body temperature than humans, averaging between 100.5ยฐF and 102.5ยฐF. By soaking up the sun's warmth, they can stay comfortable while using less energy to maintain their body temperature.

๐Ÿ˜ด It Promotes Better Rest Warmth helps muscles relax and creates the perfect environment for a cozy cat nap. Since cats spend 12-16 hours a day sleeping, finding a sunny spot makes their favorite pastime even more enjoyable.

๐Ÿฆด It Can Ease Stiff Joints Older cats, especially those with arthritis, often seek out warm places because heat can help soothe achy joints and improve comfort.

๐Ÿพ It's an Instinct Wild cats often rested in warm, protected areas during the day to conserve energy for hunting. Our house cats may have traded the hunt for a food bowl, but many of those instincts remain.

โš ๏ธ A Quick Safety Reminder While indoor sunbathing is generally safe, make sure your cat always has access to fresh water and cooler areas if they become too warm. Cats can overheat, especially during the hotter months.

So the next time you find your cat stretched out like a furry solar panel in a beam of sunshine, just remember: they're not being lazy. They're practicing efficient feline energy management! โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿˆ

Tip: If your senior cat suddenly starts seeking out heat much more than usual, it may be worth scheduling an exam. Increased heat-seeking behavior can sometimes be associated with underlying health conditions that we'd be happy to evaluate.

๐ŸŒฆ๐Ÿพ Rainy Season Is Here... and So Are the Risks!

While the showers may be a welcome change to our previous conditions, rain can create hidden health hazards for our pets.

Keep an eye out for these common seasonal concerns:

๐ŸฆŸ Fleas & Ticks
Warm, humid conditions provide the perfect environment for parasites to thrive. Consistent monthly prevention is your pet's best defense.

๐Ÿฉบ Skin Irritations & Infections
Wet fur and damp skin can lead to bacterial and fungal infections, especially in pets with thick coats or skin folds.

๐Ÿคข Digestive Upset
Standing water, spoiled food, and outdoor debris can expose pets to bacteria and parasites that may cause vomiting or diarrhea.

๐Ÿคง Respiratory Illnesses
Extended exposure to wet conditions can contribute to coughing, sneezing, and other respiratory issues.

โœ… Dry your pet thoroughly after outdoor adventures.
โœ… Keep up with flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.
โœ… Provide clean, fresh drinking water at all times.
โœ… Contact your veterinarian if you notice itching, skin changes, coughing, vomiting, or diarrhea.

A little prevention goes a long way. Let's keep our furry family members healthy, happy, and protected all season long! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑโค๏ธ

๐Ÿพ Why We Recommend the Leptospirosis Vaccine ๐Ÿพ

At our clinic, one of the vaccines we strongly recommend for many dogs is the Leptospirosis vaccine, often called the "Lepto vaccine." While it may not be as well-known as rabies or distemper, Leptospirosis is a serious disease that can have devastating consequences for both pets and people.

๐Ÿ’ง What is Leptospirosis? Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can cause severe damage to a dog's kidneys and liver. In some cases, it can lead to permanent organ damage, hospitalization, or even death.

๐Ÿ• How Do Dogs Contract Leptospirosis? Many people are surprised to learn that dogs do not have to live in the woods or on a farm to be at risk.

Dogs can become infected by: โœ”๏ธ Drinking from puddles, ponds, creeks, or standing water
โœ”๏ธ Walking through contaminated water or mud
โœ”๏ธ Contact with urine from infected wildlife such as raccoons, opossums, skunks, squirrels, rats, and mice
โœ”๏ธ Exposure in backyards, parks, hiking trails, campgrounds, and even urban neighborhoods

Because wildlife frequently visit residential areas, even dogs that only go outside to potty can be exposed.

โš ๏ธ Why Is It So Important? Leptospirosis is considered a zoonotic disease, meaning it can spread from animals to humans. This makes prevention especially important for protecting not only your pet, but your family as well.

Signs of Leptospirosis may include: โ€ข Lethargy โ€ข Fever โ€ข Vomiting โ€ข Diarrhea โ€ข Loss of appetite โ€ข Increased thirst or urination โ€ข Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)

Unfortunately, symptoms can sometimes appear suddenly and progress quickly.

๐Ÿ’™ Prevention Is Much Easier Than Treatment Treatment for Leptospirosis can require hospitalization, intensive care, and extensive diagnostics. Vaccination is one of the safest and most effective ways to reduce your dog's risk of infection.

If you have questions about whether the Leptospirosis vaccine is right for your pet, our team would be happy to discuss your pet's lifestyle and risk factors.

๐Ÿพ A simple vaccine today could prevent a serious illness tomorrow. ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿšจ Fleas & Ticks Are Out in FULL FORCE This Year! ๐Ÿšจ

If it seems like we're talking about fleas and ticks more than usual lately... it's because we're seeing them more than usual lately.

Thanks to our mild winter and warm, humid weather, flea and tick populations have exploded this season. We are diagnosing more flea infestations, flea allergy dermatitis, tick bites, and tick-borne diseases than we typically see this time of year.

"But my pet only goes outside to potty..."

Unfortunately, that's all it takes.

๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ Ticks wait in grass, leaves, shrubs, and along walkways for a passing host. A quick trip outside can be enough for a tick to hitch a ride.

๐ŸฆŸ Fleas are even sneakier. They can live in your yard, be carried by wildlife, and can even be brought indoors on shoes, clothing, or other pets.

Why prevention matters:

โœ”๏ธ Prevents uncomfortable itching and skin infections
โœ”๏ธ Protects against flea allergy dermatitis
โœ”๏ธ Reduces the risk of tapeworms
โœ”๏ธ Helps prevent serious tick-borne diseases
โœ”๏ธ Saves you from costly and frustrating home infestations

Remember: By the time you see fleas or ticks on your pet, there are often many more hiding in the environment.

The best protection is consistent, year-round prevention, even for pets that spend most of their time indoors or only venture outside for bathroom breaks.

If your pet is not currently on flea and tick prevention, or if you're unsure which product is best, give us a call. We'd be happy to help keep your furry family members protected this season! ๐Ÿพ
