After being fitted with an E-collar, this tiny Chihuahua has been slowly making her rounds, staring suspiciously at everyone, and serving major horror movie vibes.

🔹 Mood: Betrayed 🔹 Trust level: 0/10 🔹 Appetite: Somehow still excellent 🔹 Ability to bump into furniture: Impressive

Don't worry, Peanut is doing great! Her cone may have transformed her into the star of her own suspense film, but it's helping keep her safe while she heals. 💙

☀️🌡️ Extreme Heat Alert for Pet Owners! 🐾

With dangerously high temperatures in the forecast, it's important to remember that our pets are at risk for heat-related illnesses much faster than we are.

⚠️ Pets can overheat in just minutes, even during a short walk or while spending time outdoors.

Signs of Heat Exhaustion or Heat Stroke: 🐶 Excessive panting 🐶 Drooling more than usual 🐶 Bright red gums or tongue 🐶 Weakness or stumbling 🐶 Vomiting or diarrhea 🐶 Collapse or unresponsiveness

💧 Provide plenty of fresh, cool water. 🌳 Limit outdoor activity to early morning or late evening. 🏡 Keep pets indoors during the hottest part of the day. 🔥 Remember: Asphalt and concrete can burn paw pads. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their feet!

🐾 Owners of short-muzzled (brachycephalic) breeds such as Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, Shih Tzus, and Boxers should be especially cautious. These breeds already have difficulty cooling themselves through panting and can quickly develop life-threatening heat stroke, even with minimal activity.

🚗 Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle. Cracking the windows does not provide enough protection from rising temperatures.

If your pet shows any signs of overheating, move them to a cool area immediately, offer small amounts of water, and contact your veterinarian right away.

Weekends are a little reminder to slow down, enjoy the simple moments, and spend time with the ones who make life better. For many of us, that includes the four-legged family members who greet us at the door, follow us from room to room, and somehow always know when we need a little extra comfort.

Today, take a few extra minutes to toss the ball, enjoy a walk, share a cuddle on the couch, or simply sit outside together and soak up the sunshine.

As veterinarians, we have the privilege of seeing the incredible bond between pets and their people every day. It's a bond built on loyalty, trust, and unconditional love, and it's one of life's greatest gifts.

🐾 Watch for these common symptoms: • Frequent urination • Straining to urinate • Accidents in the house or outside the litter box • Blood in the urine • Strong-smelling urine • Excessive licking of the ge***al area • Increased thirst • Signs of pain or discomfort while urinating

As veterinarians, one of the most common things we see in our feline patients is their impressive ability to locate the warmest patch of sunlight available. Whether it's a window sill, a sunroom floor, or that one spot on the couch, cats seem to have a built-in solar-powered GPS!

But why do they love sunbathing so much?

🌞 It Helps Conserve Energy Cats have a naturally higher resting body temperature than humans, averaging between 100.5°F and 102.5°F. By soaking up the sun's warmth, they can stay comfortable while using less energy to maintain their body temperature.

😴 It Promotes Better Rest Warmth helps muscles relax and creates the perfect environment for a cozy cat nap. Since cats spend 12-16 hours a day sleeping, finding a sunny spot makes their favorite pastime even more enjoyable.

🦴 It Can Ease Stiff Joints Older cats, especially those with arthritis, often seek out warm places because heat can help soothe achy joints and improve comfort.

🐾 It's an Instinct Wild cats often rested in warm, protected areas during the day to conserve energy for hunting. Our house cats may have traded the hunt for a food bowl, but many of those instincts remain.

⚠️ A Quick Safety Reminder While indoor sunbathing is generally safe, make sure your cat always has access to fresh water and cooler areas if they become too warm. Cats can overheat, especially during the hotter months.

Keep an eye out for these common seasonal concerns:

🦟 Fleas & Ticks
Warm, humid conditions provide the perfect environment for parasites to thrive. Consistent monthly prevention is your pet's best defense.

🩺 Skin Irritations & Infections
Wet fur and damp skin can lead to bacterial and fungal infections, especially in pets with thick coats or skin folds.

🤢 Digestive Upset
Standing water, spoiled food, and outdoor debris can expose pets to bacteria and parasites that may cause vomiting or diarrhea.

🤧 Respiratory Illnesses
Extended exposure to wet conditions can contribute to coughing, sneezing, and other respiratory issues.

🐾 Why We Recommend the Leptospirosis Vaccine 🐾

At our clinic, one of the vaccines we strongly recommend for many dogs is the Leptospirosis vaccine, often called the "Lepto vaccine." While it may not be as well-known as rabies or distemper, Leptospirosis is a serious disease that can have devastating consequences for both pets and people.

💧 What is Leptospirosis? Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can cause severe damage to a dog's kidneys and liver. In some cases, it can lead to permanent organ damage, hospitalization, or even death.

🐕 How Do Dogs Contract Leptospirosis? Many people are surprised to learn that dogs do not have to live in the woods or on a farm to be at risk.

Dogs can become infected by: ✔️ Drinking from puddles, ponds, creeks, or standing water
✔️ Walking through contaminated water or mud
✔️ Contact with urine from infected wildlife such as raccoons, opossums, skunks, squirrels, rats, and mice
✔️ Exposure in backyards, parks, hiking trails, campgrounds, and even urban neighborhoods

Because wildlife frequently visit residential areas, even dogs that only go outside to potty can be exposed.

⚠️ Why Is It So Important? Leptospirosis is considered a zoonotic disease, meaning it can spread from animals to humans. This makes prevention especially important for protecting not only your pet, but your family as well.

🚨 Fleas & Ticks Are Out in FULL FORCE This Year! 🚨

If it seems like we're talking about fleas and ticks more than usual lately... it's because we're seeing them more than usual lately.

Thanks to our mild winter and warm, humid weather, flea and tick populations have exploded this season. We are diagnosing more flea infestations, flea allergy dermatitis, tick bites, and tick-borne diseases than we typically see this time of year.

"But my pet only goes outside to potty..."

Unfortunately, that's all it takes.

🕷️ Ticks wait in grass, leaves, shrubs, and along walkways for a passing host. A quick trip outside can be enough for a tick to hitch a ride.

🦟 Fleas are even sneakier. They can live in your yard, be carried by wildlife, and can even be brought indoors on shoes, clothing, or other pets.

Why prevention matters:

✔️ Prevents uncomfortable itching and skin infections
✔️ Protects against flea allergy dermatitis
✔️ Reduces the risk of tapeworms
