Since the early 20th century, the Royal Family has presented sprigs of shamrock to the Irish Guards on St. Patrick’s Day. While the soldiers get their greenery pinned to their caps, the real star of the show is the Regimental Mascot: a purebred Irish Wolfhound.

The Royal Handover tradition was solidified by Queen Alexandra in 1901. In recent years, the duty fell to Kate Middleton (The Princess of Wales) in her role as the Honorary Colonel of the Irish Guards.

After the soldiers are served, the Princess steps forward to the Irish Wolfhound. She doesn't just give him a pat; she fastens a specially crafted, oversized sprig of shamrock to the dog’s silver-plated collar.

Despite being the tallest dog breed in the world, the mascot is trained to stand perfectly still during the ceremony. The Princess often shares a quiet word (and sometimes a hidden treat) with the hound while the cameras flash.
