The "Raincoat" Mistake: Why a Donkey is NOT a Small Horse.

We see it all the time: A horse and a donkey standing in a field during a cold rainstorm. The horse is grazing happily. The donkey looks miserable.

Many owners think: "If the horse is fine, the donkey is fine."

Wrong. Biologically, you are looking at two completely different animals.

🌵 1. The Desert DNA Horses (Equus ferus) evolved on windy, rainy temperate plains. They are built for bad weather. Donkeys (Equus africanus) evolved in the African Desert. They are built for dry heat, not wet cold.

🧽 2. The "Sponge" Effect Run your hand over a horse in the rain. The water beads up and rolls off. Why? Because horses produce sebum (natural grease) and have a dense undercoat that acts as a natural raincoat. Donkeys do not have this. Their hair is coarse and lacks that protective grease layer. When it rains, water doesn't roll off a donkey—it soaks in. A wet donkey is wearing a soaking wet wool sweater against its skin. It sucks the heat right out of their body.

⚠️ 3. The Danger Zone Because they lack this waterproofing, a donkey can enter hypothermia in temperatures where a horse would be perfectly comfortable. Without shelter, this leads to:

Pneumonia (a leading killer of donkeys).

"Rain Scald" (severe skin rot).

Immense stress (look for the "hunched" posture).

📚 The Science: According to The Donkey Sanctuary (UK), the world's leading authority on donkey welfare: "Donkeys do not have a waterproof coat like the horse."

The Rule: A horse can stand in the rain. A donkey MUST have a roof.

I have no idea how they accomplished putting the buffet table outside the fence, but they did. Also, Clancy took Karen for a walk, Noah showed off his sore foot, Harry took a selfie, Tara tried to talk Duskie into joining her therapy program and Rosie the mule snuggled with Brianna. Also, our girls Laverne and Shirley came back from their trip to the Prescott Valley. Seems they didn’t get along with the resident dog and thought it was just too darn cold up there! We are so happy to have them back with us!

Happy Donkey Day

Beautiful tribute to our beloved Donkeys to share on this WORLD DONKEY DAY MAY 8 🌎
HUG a Donkey(s) when you can on this day and every day!
Every day we should celebrate Donkeys and Mules, the world hardest working Animals. Donkeys and Mules are a Blessing 💞 ~ Ariane

May first is International Workers’ Day Worldwide (except for the US and Canada) to remind humanity of the value of those among us who work hard. A separate day seemed to be necessary to remind humanity of the Animal workers among us, who work just as hard as the human workers they usually help, and who suffer from an even lower value. So therefore a week later May 8th, we celebrate Donkeys and Mules.
For more than 6000 years DONKEYS have been carrying and pulling loads, turning wheels and generally laboring away to extend the work of humans. More recently they have been joined by horses, camels, elephants and oxen, but even today, all over the world where resources are scarce and speed is less important, Donkeys are still the main providers of such work.
Give them a thought; give them some appreciation. If any are nearby, go give them a hug or a carrot!

Text inspired by Peta Jones.

PS: The flyer was sent to me by a follower, Marilyn Clark in 2017. I can't share her post anymore. Facebook doesn't allow me to share visitors' posts anymore for unknown reason.
I couldn't find anything about the author of that poem, if anyone has any information, please let me know. Thanks.

One more reason to love donkeys

The Donkey's Cross 🙏
I like to share this beautiful tribute to our beloved Donkeys this time of the year. ~ Ariane

The Donkeys were so important to Christ that they are mentioned 444 times in the Bible. The humble Donkey is also the only mammal given speech in the Bible.
One of the reasons I love Donkeys so much: Donkeys accompanied Jesus and the Holy Family throughout Their lives.

*** The Donkey's Cross:
“Bring me the c**t of a Donkey” was the Master's request.
A young Donkey was brought to Jesus to carry Him to Jerusalem.
Five days later He was ordered to be crucified.
The Little Donkey so loved The Lord that he wanted to help Him carry the cross.
But Alas, he was pushed away.
The sad little Donkey waited to say goodbye until nearly all had left.
As he turned to leave, the shadow of the cross fell upon his back and shoulders.
And there it has remained, a tribute to the loyalty and love of the humblest of God's creatures. ***
