🍂🎃 FALL IS IN THE AIR… AND OUR ANIMALS KNOW IT TOO! 🐴🐶🐱
The mornings are getting crisper, the days are getting shorter, and that good ol’ Wyobraska fall weather is keeping us guessing! One day we’re sweating, the next we’re digging out hoodies. 😂 But while we’re switching out our summer clothes for flannels, don’t forget our animals are adjusting to the changing seasons, too!
🐶🍁 DOGS
• Cooler mornings can make stiff, arthritic joints more noticeable, especially in our senior pups.
• Short-haired dogs, little dogs, and older pups may need an extra layer when those temperatures drop.
• Fall walks mean fallen leaves, muddy paws, and sometimes antifreeze or other seasonal hazards. Keep an eye on what your dog sniffs, licks, and eats!
• Hunting season means extra time outdoors for many dogs. Check those paws and watch for cuts, ticks, and injuries after adventures.
🐱🎃 CATS
• As temperatures drop, outdoor cats start looking for warm places to curl up. Always bang on your vehicle hood before starting it!
• Fall decorations, potpourri, and certain seasonal plants can pose risks to curious kitties. Keep an eye on those whiskered troublemakers!
• Senior cats may become stiffer as the weather cools, so watch for changes in jumping, climbing, or using the litter box.
🐴🍂 HORSES
• Those fluffy winter coats are starting to come in! Remember, a growing coat doesn't automatically mean your horse is ready for every weather change.
• Cooler weather can mean less water intake, especially when water gets chilly. Make sure your horse always has access to fresh water to help reduce the risk of impaction colic.
• Fall grass can sometimes be high in nonstructural carbohydrates, especially after cool nights and sunny days. Horses prone to laminitis may need extra attention to grazing and diet.
• Check body condition, shelter, and blanketing needs as temperatures fluctuate. Every horse is different!
🍁 YOUR FALL ANIMAL CARE CHECKLIST:
✔️ Keep fresh water available.
✔️ Check shelters, bedding, and outdoor living spaces before the first hard freeze.
✔️ Stay consistent with parasite prevention and routine wellness care.
✔️ Watch senior animals and those with chronic conditions a little closer.
✔️ Store antifreeze and other chemicals securely, and clean up spills immediately.
🍂 Fall is a beautiful time of year, but those temperature swings can sneak up on us! A little preparation now can make a big difference in keeping your four-legged family members comfortable and healthy heading into winter.
