I have had Ricky since he was 4 months old. I started him under saddle 4 months ago and the experience has opened my mind. So today I wanted them all to have some fun with my experiment on forward movement. It seems like they get stuck alot and transitions can be choppy. I wanted to watch them move out riderless. Within minutes they picked up a pattern along the fenceline and just went for it. I even added jumps. They never hesitated. So now I know that I am the one who is stuck and choppy.
It reminded me of my 3rd and 4th ride. On ride 3 Ricky slipped into a lope from a trot and I let him have it. Next class I very gently asked for the lope from a trot and WOW. He bucked to the end of the arena, spun around and watched me get up off the ground. I am sure I got all balled up anticipating my cue. We’ve progressed but I try to be more aware of my communication.
I think if we spent more time letting our horses go when we ask for it than holding them back we’d all be safer.

Ricky is my merry prankster. Scrapes halters over his ears, unties knots ( everyone’s) and constantly pulls my top knot if I don’t pay attention.
I wanted to see what he would do with this ball that is swinging from a retractable extension cord wheel hanging from the ceiling.
He had himself some fun!

Kelsey and Jamie had just completed their third lesson of the GET program at TRUST on Ranch and Dami when a tragedy occurred on their farm. Dami got into a bad accident involving her back leg which ended in her having to be put down several days later. A great loss. It has been sad for all of us but heart breaking for Jamie. She lost a friend, her spirit horse. Ranch lost his pasture mate. Everyone is grieving and healing. Hopefully a lovely horse will come into Jamie’s life in the near future.
