Five years after embarking on a life-changing, 22-month, round-the-world trip, I have finally finished my travel memoir!! Now available at weightofempathy.com as an e-book, or a full-color, large format paperback. Here's a description:

The Weight of Empathy is an exploration of both our relationship with animals and the author's own personal process of learning how to be a compassionate person in an often violent and uncaring world. Accompanied by over a hundred photographs, it takes the form of a travel memoir spanning a twenty-two-month trip around the world. It focuses on visits to half a dozen animal sanctuaries in Southeast Asia, India, and Europe, and also serves in part as an origin story for the philanthropic enterprise which was started upon the his return: Haven Hearts, a vegan dog treat company which donates 100% of its profits to farm animal sanctuaries.

The book begins on the west coast of the US, and traces a path through Australia, Japan, SE Asia, India, Sri Lanka, Israel, Egypt, Europe, and back through the United States. The journey leads back to a few of the author's favorite places, to countless new destinations, and ultimately back through his childhood home, as he struggles to learn how to think about his role in the world in a way that honors his values and life story, the current and historical state of the planet, and all those he came to know and love along the way. The Weight of Empathy is part autobiography, part travel story, and part meditation on the diversity of human experience, our failings, and our potential. Through an impassioned and personal, yet thoroughly reasoned approach, it is a call to action in the interest of a kinder, more just, and merciful world.

BIG NEWS: It pains me to have to announce the end of Haven Hearts. Despite my best efforts, 2020 and the pandemic provided too many challenges, and the business is no longer viable. I hope to be able to restart or reimagine Haven Hearts when things are more stable, but it's far too soon to say. For now, it's time to stock up on our doggie treats, wherever you buy them!

Although the sting of disappointment is still fresh, I am so proud of what I was able to accomplish through Haven Hearts, with your support. Together we raised and donated over $13,000 to deserving animal sanctuaries, gave lifetime sponsorships to 18 animals, and shared their rescue stories with thousands of people (a few are pictured here). I have been overwhelmed by your support at every turn, and I'm so grateful you came on this journey with me. There's no question we fulfilled the Haven Hearts mission of making the world a little bit kinder.

I've got a few more bags of treats left (and one more hat), so if you're in need—and your normal retailer is out—shoot me a message. Have you heard about Joleen? She's one of my favorite people at one of my favorite animal sanctuaries, and she's currently on a cross-country road trip to seek some hard to find medical care. She was rescued by Odd Man INN from criminal neglect—living in sh*t with her pig family and subsisting on expired boxes of creamer—and found paradise at Odd Man Inn in Washington state. She healed from the trauma and blossomed into a powerful, gentle, loving, and sensitive person, and that's how she's treated at the Refuge—as a person.

So when she developed mysterious health problems that made it difficult to walk, they decided to do anything it takes to give her a chance. Sophisticated medical care is often hard to find for "food" animals, so hard that the nearest place to get what she needs is in Pennsylvania!! Instead of decided she's not worth the expense, they are giving her the chance she deserves. In the process they may end up helping others like her who someday develop similar symptoms, and they demonstrate a kind of love and devotion that is absolutely inspiring and heart warming.

RESCUE STORY: Teacup was sold by a scam breeder who promised he'd never be more than 30 pounds. In reality all pigs are tiny when they are born, but even pot-bellied pigs grow to 100 pounds or more. When Teacup outgrew his owner's apartment, they could no longer care for him. After leaving him alone in a backyard, and unable to find pig family housing, Teacup was released to out to pasture sanctuary in Estacada, Oregon. There he has all the space he needs to wander and explore (or just enjoy the sunshine), and human and pig friends who love him very much. He's appreciated not as a novelty, but as the big personality and sensitive soul he is. 🐖

Normally we devote 100% of profits to rescued farm animals. Luckily while these times have been challenging, we have enough revenue right now to also contribute to the growing movement for racial justice. There are many worthy organizations, but we've chosen to support National Bail Out, a "Black-led and Black-centered collective of abolitionists organizers, lawyers and activists building a community-based movement to support our folks and end systems of pretrial detention and ultimately mass incarceration." No one deserves to live in a cage, and certainly not because they can't afford bail. Those stuck in jail pretrial facing family separation, or loss of jobs and housing, are now also at extreme risk of contracting covid-19. Bailout funds are a great way to blunt the impact of the discriminatory cash bail system. Once folks show up for trial the money is returned to the fund so others can be freed. The National Bailout Collective also provides "fellowship and employment opportunities for those people out in order to support their growth and create a national community of leaders who have experienced incarceration." Give them a follow and give them your support!

Met this beautiful family while volunteering at Animal Aid Unlimited in Rajasthan, India. While dairy cows normally have their babies taken away shortly after birth, this lucky boy got to grow up with mom at the sanctuary. They cuddle and play, and when he gets frisky and zooms around the paddock she follows close behind to make sure he's safe. I wish all cows got to live such a sweet life—big thanks to all the hard work they do at Animal Aid! Give them a follow, and definitely visit if you make it to India! ♥️

Haven Hearts was launched two years ago. The idea was simple: generate revenue for animal sanctuaries by giving people an opportunity to contribute to a concrete act of kindness, without asking them to compromise or sacrifice. By donating 100% of profits from our organic, vegan dog treats, with your support we've raised thousands of dollars for rescued animals, given exposure to the sanctuaries doing the hard work, and encouraged dog lovers to expand their circle of empathy to include farmed animals.

These photos are from a recent visit to Ahimsa Animal Sanctuary in Kerala, India. Everyone, meet our latest sponsorship: the lovely Daisy Mae! In her previous life, she was used for breeding. After having a litter that was too small her owner decided she was no longer profitable, and hoped to make a few bucks selling her for meat.
