Flea season in Pennsylvania starts earlier and lasts longer than most people think.

One flea can lay 50 eggs a day. By the time you see fleas on your pet, there are likely hundreds in your home—on carpets, furniture, bedding.

Fleas also carry:
• Tapeworms
• Bartonella (cat scratch disease)
• Flea allergy dermatitis (severe itching from even one bite)

Prevention is easier than elimination. We recommend year-round protection tailored to your pet's lifestyle—indoor/outdoor habits, other pets in the home, and any known sensitivities.

If you're seeing fleas or excessive scratching, we can help you break the cycle.

Occasional ear scratching is normal. Constant head shaking, rubbing ears on furniture, or a strong odor? That's different.

Chronic ear issues often signal:
• Allergies (environmental or food-related)
• Yeast or bacterial infections
• Ear mites (especially in cats)
• Underlying skin conditions

We don't just treat the ear infection and send you home. We look for the root cause—because if it keeps coming back, something else is driving it.

Our in-house lab lets us examine ear samples immediately and start targeted treatment the same day.

If your pet's been dealing with ear trouble for weeks or months, let's figure out why.

Pennsylvania summers can go from mild to sweltering fast, and pets feel it more than we do.

What overheating looks like:
• Heavy panting that doesn't stop
• Drooling more than usual
• Weakness or stumbling
• Bright red gums

Brachycephalic breeds (bulldogs, pugs, Persian cats) are at higher risk, but any pet can overheat in a hot car, during midday walks, or without access to shade and water.

If your pet shows signs of heat stress, cool them gradually with room-temperature water and call us immediately. Heat stroke moves fast.

Dr. Gloates has treated too many preventable cases. Don't wait to see if it gets better.

Some of our longest relationships at Vetcetera span decades.

We've cared for puppies who became seniors. Kittens who grew into wise, 15-year-old companions. Families who've brought us three generations of pets.

That's what happens when a practice takes time to know you—not just your pet's chart, but their personality, their quirks, what makes them anxious, what makes them wag.

Dr. Gloates still remembers the pets he met in his early years here. That's the kind of care we're built on.

If you're looking for a veterinary partner who'll be there for the long haul, we're here. 💙

Memorial Day weekend means gatherings, grills, and guests—which can be stressful or risky for pets.

Quick safety reminders:
🚫 Keep pets away from grills, hot coals, and lighter fluid
🚫 No corn cobs (obstruction risk), cooked bones (splinter hazard), or fatty foods (pancreatitis trigger)
✔ Create a quiet space indoors if your pet gets anxious around crowds
✔ Make sure ID tags and microchips are current in case someone leaves a gate open

If your pet gets into something they shouldn't, call us. We'd rather talk you through it than have you wait and wonder.

Enjoy the long weekend safely. 🇺🇸
