Schenectady Urban Farms Farmland is tended together with SiCM staff farmers overseeing healthy, organic practices and crop rotation year round. No experience is necessary!

Our mission is to farm nutrient-dense, fresh foods that feed our members & neighbors; to educate others in sustainable, replicable urban farming practices; and to develop connections that strengthen our community & promote food security in Schenectady. 🌱 SiCM's Schenectady Urban Farms began in 2012 with the Vale Urban Farm and a mission to lower barriers to accessing fresh food, build community, and green Schenectady. Three farms and a community orchard-over two acres of city growing space- now provide fruit, vegetables, flowers, herbs, egg laying chickens, bees, and community composting to all participants of the farms. Members work a minimum of two hours/week on the farms in various capacities that fit their interests, and are able to get a share of the harvest. Additional food is grown for special community programs and any excess food is given to the SiCM Food Pantry and distributed there. Volunteers are welcomed to work and learn aspects of cimmunity urban farming.

On Saturday morning, we welcomed a work group from Reach Out Saint Roseβ€”former employees and alums who are continuing a longstanding volunteer tradition!

Between rainfalls, the group sharpened tools and cleaned up the space at Fehr between the compost and the Apothecary Garden. 🌧️πŸͺ΄

Thank you to this talented, generous group for joining us and lending a helping hand!

This past week, some of our members got together to plant 10 new American Persimmon Trees at Vale Orchard! 🌳

The American persimmon (Diospyros Virginian) are a rare, native fruit-bearing tree ranked as S2, imperiled state conservation status. There are a very small number remaining in New York State.

Persimmon trees are dioecious, meaning male and female reproductive parts grow on separate trees. Only female persimmon trees bear fruit, while male trees provide the pollen needed for pollination. It is impossible to tell if a persimmon sapling is male or female until it reaches maturity and produces flowers, which typically takes five to eight years and the trees can grow up to 25 feet!

The bare root saplings were bought from Schenectady County Soil & Water Conservation District and Compost Facility at the Spring Sale, and planted in the Vale Orchard by Deb, Priti, Rohinton and Steve. Thank you all for your help in making this possible!

Yesterday evening, Schenectady Urban Farms hosted our First Annual Member Meeting & Potluck! πŸ₯—πŸ“πŸ₯™

We got together to hear reports from our Executive Director, Dave Morrow, and from our Treasurer and Finance Committee on our farms progress. Members got the opportunity to vote for our new Board, be in conversation about their involvement with the farm and gain further insight on our operations.

We shared delicious meals amongst one another. Members even brought some dishes that had ingredients that were harvested from our farms! πŸ₯•πŸ§„

We’d like to thank our wonderful members for taking the time to gather in community with us to discuss and devour delicious food! We hope to have more opportunities like this for our members to stay involved in the progress of SUF as we expand as an organization. 🌱

On Saturday, we had three wonderful volunteer groups come join us at Fehr Farm!

A group of eight employees of GE Vernova (green shirts), a 20-person group from Union College (maroon shirts), and an additional 40-person group from Union after that.

These groups harvested food and prepped it for donation to the Free Food Fridge; seeded cell trays of collard greens and fast-growing broccoli; weeded around the blueberries, the raspberries, and several vegetable rows; and spread compost over seven vegetable beds.

We’d like to say a sincere Thank You to these skillful, hardworking folks who dedicated time this weekend to volunteer with us. 🌱
