A huge thank you to everyone who sent prayers and donated to the care and hospitalization of Lumi. 🤍

In July, Lumi came to us with the help of a hard working and amazing trapper in the Bronx. She witnessed a terrible person putting rat poison in the outdoor colony feeding stations in hope of wiping out the friendly strays on his street. One of the victims was our sweet Lumi, originally estimated to be one year old, but found last month to be 10 years old.

Although the poison took a horrific toll on her already tiny body, she fought and fought, her hair grew back, and she was strong, yet throughout the entire process she remained the sweetest lap cat and climbed on the lap of every guest that entered our door.

This past week, Lumi stopped eating and drinking and her weight dropped abruptly. Staff began syringe feeding, administering subcutaneous fluids, and we had her seen for an upper respiratory infection that was also hindering her ability to eat or drink.

Monday we rushed her to the emergency vet, where a series of ultrasounds, tests and a full blood panel revealed the worst. Lumi not only had the poison still affecting her internal organs, but she also had underlying cancer, a ruptured artery and it was filling her body with liquid. Her blood glucose levels were a scary 30, and should have been in the range of 80-90. Unable to stand and keep her head up, the veterinary team helped Lumi peacefully cross the rainbow bridge at one o'clock, in the arms of staff, volunteers and owner and those that loved her so much.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank everyone who came in over the summer and as of late, and had the pleasure of meeting Lumi. She was special, and despite the difficulties stacked against her and the cruelty she endured in the city before she came to us, we are so grateful to have had her love in the building this year. We will never forget you 🐈‍⬛

Meet Mimi! This loving and resilient lady is looking for her forever home after being abandoned at the end of 2025. A Harlem area rescue group helped Mimi get spayed and vetted as a favor to a Harlem resident back in 2016, when Mimi was a young kitty, so she’s probably about 11 or 12 now. Mimi is a short haired black kitty and in great health—bloodwork is all good and even her teeth are great. We should all be so lucky in health!

Mimi has been doing well in foster homes, and they report that Mimi is an excellent companion. She mostly keeps to herself, lounging in sunny spots and gazing out windows. But she loves visiting you on the couch or at your desk, coming up for pets and entertaining you with her silly antics (which usually involve chasing her toy mice). Mimi enjoys mealtime with dry and wet foods and has immaculate litter box manners.

Mimi would do best in a calm home without other pets (the cats in her current foster home seem to make her nervous). As much as Mimi likes pets and play time, she likes those things on her terms, and when she's done, she likes peace and quiet!
