Hi all! The rain may be hanging around this afternoon, but the forecast for this evening looks absolutely beautiful. We’ll be in Oakmont tonight from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm for the Oakmont Night Markets and we’d love to spend the evening with you.

Our booth will be filled with cute collectibles, handmade crafts, Sanctuary merch, freshly made spreads from the farm, honey courtesy of our rescued bees, beeswax lip balm, plus a chance to meet a few of our animal ambassadors…including Ronny! We’ll also be raffling off a beautiful hibiscus plant, generously donated by the Kiski Garden Center!

Come enjoy the nice weather, stroll the market and say hello. We can’t wait to see you!

There’s a silver lining to all the storm damage. The fallen trees have gifted Lenny an unbelievable collection of top‑tier sticks. He’s been “helping” with cleanup by testing every single one, tail wagging, stick crumbs everywhere. I’m not sure how much work he’s getting done, but he’s definitely having a blast. 😁

06/12/2026

We had a few trees come down around the property, just missing our tractor and round pen. The wind took out our sign out front, too. We're so grateful all of the animals are okay and nothing was damaged that can't be fixed.

How are you guys faring out there after the storms this afternoon? Hope everyone is safe and sound! 💜

I was clearing out boxes from the basement when one caught Lenny’s eye. He trotted over with that “I’m helping” confidence only he can pull off, so I told him he could carry it to the fire pit with me. My last words were, “Okay, you can help, just please don’t shred the box.” I should’ve known better.

Before I even finished the sentence, he grabbed it, sprinted to his favorite “kill” spot, and tore into it like a wild jungle creature protecting a fresh catch. Cardboard everywhere. Zero remorse. One very proud dog. And, of course, one more mess for me to clean up. It’s a good thing he’s so darn cute! 🤦‍♀️

I don’t think I've emphasized just how much BB LOVES music. I mean, this girl makes a beeline for the stage the second she hears the strum of a guitar.

Last evening, we participated in Freeport Days. Our booth happened to be right next to an acoustic act. BB couldn’t have been more thrilled. She ran volunteer Cindy over to the pagoda and tried everything in her power to get right up next to the band. Eventually, Cindy and BB reached a compromise. BB plunked herself down in the front row to watch the show, where she stayed for nearly an hour, just absorbing the melodies. We brought her over food and water since she made it clear she had no intention of leaving until they finished their set. She’s such a groupie.

Check the comments for a video of BB trying as hard as she could to get onstage. She’s one determined little lady with a huge personality, and we love her for it. ❤ 🎵

The horses all saw our farrier, Linda, last evening. This was the smoothest farrier day we’ve ever had with this crew. They usually have a lot of opinions about the whole process. Last night felt different. Each horse walked into the stocks with almost no prompting. Every hoof lifted the moment we asked. I’m still not sure if they finally realized how good a fresh trim feels or if the giant belt‑driven fan beside the stocks worked some kind of magic.

Whatever the reason, we’re grateful. The cool breeze kept everyone relaxed, which made Linda’s job so much easier. Calm horses, quick trims, happy farrier.

Linda pointed out the distinct bands on Sam’s hooves during his trim. There’s a clear line that marks his life before rescue and his life now. The dark, tight bands near the top show healthy growth. The lighter, fragile bands below reflect his time with the Amish. Now that he’s finally on a balanced diet, his hooves are growing in densely and well‑formed. Watching that transformation happen right in front of us feels incredible.

If you’d like to see Ronny’s fancy new trim in person, stop by our booth tonight at Freeport Days from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm. We look forward to seeing you! ❤

It’s supposed to be another hot one today. This past week, we’ve added extra waterers for our birdies, brought out the big belt fans for the coops and barn and given lots of fruits and veggies as treats to aid in hydration. The horses all got a nice hose down to cool off their core temperatures and wash the salt and sweat off their bodies, too.

We keep a submersible pump in the large water trough for the horses to discourage mosquitoes and to keep the water fresher. Our drafts can drink up to 50 gallons of water, each, per day when the mercury climbs. Liberty easily sucked up close to five gallons just in this single trip to the trough.

What do you guys do to keep your animals cool during hot days? We’d love to hear your tips and tricks in the comments. 💕

Sweet Pea came to us years ago after being bullied by her previous flock. She’s a tiny D’Uccle chicken with a big personality and her boyfriend, Butterscotch, just adores her. The two are inseparable.

While the rest of the flock is out free‑ranging, Sweet Pea prefers the comfort of the run, where she spends most of her days being adorably broody and supervising from her favorite perch.

Because she never ventures out, we make sure the world comes to her, including fresh treats like the dandelion greens she’s enjoying here. It’s the little things that make her happiest, and we’re more than happy to spoil her. 🥰

We have a new barn kitty resident here at the Sanctuary! Meet Skinner. This sweet boy showed up at a feeder’s house south of Pittsburgh back in February. He was in horrible shape. His breath smelled awful, his teeth were rotten and he was covered head to toe in a bacterial skin infection. Fortunately, he found his way to a wonderful rescuer who was able to give him the care and treatment he needed. The vet aged Skinner at roughly ten years…a very old age for a feral, street kitty.

Due to the nature of his horrible dental disease, Skinner ended up needing a full mouth extraction. He officially has no teeth. He’s also NOT a fan of people. His rescuer reached out to us, seeking placement in a barn where he would be safe and fed a wet food diet. Skinner was in luck: our bougie barn kitties are fed wet food, daily, so he would fit right in.

He’s currently decompressing in a large dog crate in our loft as he acclimates to the sights and sounds of the Sanctuary. Barn life is a big change from the streets of Pittsburgh. We trust he’ll do just fine in a few weeks.

Please join me in welcoming Skinner to the Sanctuary family! ❤
