I can't believe we are only one month away from our 5th Anniversary Basket Bingo Bash! How did that happen?! I swear we just announced it yesterday and suddenly we're excitedly staring down the final countdown.

If you haven’t grabbed your tickets yet, now is the perfect time. Space is limited and this event fills up fast. We want you there celebrating five whole years of helping injured, abandoned, abused and unwanted farm animals find safety and love. It is going to be such a fun afternoon and we would be thrilled to pack the fire hall with familiar faces and new friends.

We also have some truly wonderful baskets donated by several local businesses. They are adorable. They are generous. They are already tempting me and I am not even allowed to play. Please share the event, tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell the person behind you in the grocery store line. The more people who join us, the more support we have to continue our mission to help those without a voice.

Many of you have met Raven, Willow and Hawkeye. These three chickies are some of our animal ambassadors who accompany us to public events. They live inside year-round due to their disabilities.

Raven is our longest resident chicken. She’s been with the Sanctuary for ten whole years! At this point, nothing surprises her. She’s seen and done it all. Raven only has one toe on her right foot, giving her this cute little hopping method of getting around. Once Hawkeye arrived, Raven took on the very important role of serving as her seeing-eye chicken.

Yes, you read that right. Hawkeye is blind. She survived a raccoon attack at the expense of her eyes. This sweet girl can’t see, but she’s able to live a very full life thanks to her friends. They direct her to food and water and provide comfort when she’s feeling overwhelmed or stressed.

The little grey chicken is Willow. She was surrendered to the Sanctuary after being brutally attacked by her previous flock mates. Her prior flock members bit off the tips of several of her toes and severed the ligaments in her leg, making it impossible for her to extend her limbs fully.

Every time this little crew is outside for some fresh air, Ludacris marches over like it is opening night of his personal romance musical. He dances. He sings. He brings gifts hoping to impress his muse. And every single time, Raven shuts him down with the same unimpressed stare she has perfected over ten years of indoor chicken life. It never slows him. He simply resets, fluffs his feathers and prepares for his next performance. At this point, it’s less a courtship and more of a long running sitcom, with Raven committed to her role as the eternally disinterested lead. I have to hand it to him, though. He never, ever gives up. If persistence were a sport, Ludacris would be our undefeated champion. 😃

What’s more fun than hiking with a horse? We took Ronny to Harrison Hills Park for a change of scenery and some exercise. Ronny has congenital lordosis, which is a spinal deformity. We can’t fix it, but we can keep it from progressing through thoughtful movement and targeted activities. In addition to driving, hill work is one of the best ways to strengthen his back muscles and support better spinal alignment.

This was Ronny’s first time in the woods, as far as we know. We expected a nice, leisurely stroll while he got used to his surroundings and took in the various sights and smells. Oh my gosh, it was anything but. He spent most of his time with his nose to the ground, sniffing the exact same path Liberty took with us the day before. He couldn’t understand how he could smell his girlfriend, but she was nowhere to be found. As a result, this boy barely stopped to smell the roses. He had me RUNNING up and down the steep hills of the trail while he tried to solve the mystery of the missing mare and I raced to keep up with his long stride.

By the end, Ronny had completed a full workout, I had completed several, and the forest had no idea what hit it. He was proud of himself, I was out of breath, and we both agreed Liberty clearly owes him an explanation. Even with all the chaos, it was a fantastic outing that gave him the hill work he needs and the adventure to stimulate his mind. ❤

Several months ago, we received an email from Val at The Speckled Hen Chocolate Company, letting us know she had been approached by Bev from Peoples Natural Gas about their Eat, Drink, Help program, a community initiative where local food‑related businesses partner with a nonprofit of their choice. The business selects a specially marked item to sell, and one dollar from every purchase goes directly to the nonprofit until the $2,000 mark is reached. Once the goal is met, Peoples cuts a check to the charity. It’s a simple, clever way to support local businesses and local causes at the same time.

Val chose J and J Farms Animal Sanctuary as her beneficiary, and thanks to her customers - and their excellent taste in chocolate - we reached the full $2,000. Yesterday, we received our check, complete with a giant photo‑op check featuring Bev from Peoples and Val from The Speckled Hen. It was such a fun moment and a reminder of how much good can come from community partnerships.

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Val, Bev, Peoples Natural Gas and everyone who purchased the specially marked Speckled Hen treats. This donation couldn’t have come at a better time. We just had a load of hay delivered last week for nearly the exact same dollar amount, the hay we rely on to keep our horses’ bellies full during the coldest winter days.

Programs like this keep our mission moving forward, and we’re grateful to be part of a community that shows up for us, and for the animals, time and time again. You guys are simply amazing! 🥰

Velcro is a very big, very fluffy kitty, and sometimes all that fluff gets the best of him. He can’t always reach his back to groom, which means mats tend to form faster than we can keep up with. We brush him regularly, but Velcro is a professional mischief‑maker, so staying ahead of the fluff is a full‑time job in itself.

Yesterday we noticed a few large mats pulling on his skin, so it was officially time to break out the clippers. He did amazingly well. We had him snuggled into a cat bed, burritoed in a towel, and armed with a lickable treat to keep him occupied. He was so focused on the treat, he barely acknowledged the clippers. The only growl he offered was when another cat dared to glance in the direction of his snack. Classic Velcro.

We didn’t get every mat this round, but we removed the worst of them and he has to feel so much better. We’ll repeat the process soon so Velcro can get back to being 100% fluffy without the extra “texture.” ❤️

Help us celebrate a very special milestone: J and J Farms Animal Sanctuary has been helping injured, abandoned, abused and unwanted farm animals for five whole years! To honor this momentous occasion, we’re hosting our 5th Anniversary Basket Bingo Bash, a fundraiser benefiting the animals at J and J Farms Animal Sanctuary. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door, and include 9 regular bingo games of 6 cards, each, and desserts. Need more chances to win? Extra bingo books are just $10.

In addition to regular basket bingo, you’ll have the option to purchase special bingo games that pay cash! Plus, take part in our basket raffle, pull tab games, our own duck-themed version of 50/50 and other fun activities. The fire hall’s bar and kitchen will be open for drinks and snacks, as well, so make sure to bring both your bingo dauber and your appetite!

All proceeds from bingo and side games support the residents of J and J Farms Animal Sanctuary. Space is limited to 150 participants. Be sure to get your tickets early and secure your seat.

Our Volunteer and Events Coordinator, Pam, does triple duty. In addition to helping us tremendously at the Sanctuary and working her full-time job, she’s a volunteer firefighter and President of New Kensington Fire Department Company #4. We’re not sure when she finds the time to sleep.

Her fire company held their annual family picnic yesterday. The weather couldn’t have been more beautiful and the food spread was expansive. Pam graciously invited our animal ambassadors to attend, and, boy, did they have a good time!

I lost count along the way, but I’m pretty sure Ronny ate at least 6 pounds of apples and a pound or two of carrots. He loved every minute of it. Our chickens and ducks also enjoyed the afternoon, snacking on watermelon and corn on the cob, while watching water battles and other fun firefighter games.

Thank you, New Ken #4, for including us in your special day. We had a wonderful afternoon. 🚒❤️

Ben’s Buckets update!

Oh my gosh, you guys are amazing! I never got a chance to properly thank everyone. The day I posted the fundraiser was the same afternoon we lost BB. Our minds and hearts were elsewhere at the time.

Thanks to your generous financial and in-kind donations, we now have a stack of buckets on deck for when Ben inevitably causes more chaos, plus some extra funds, because something tells me we’re going to need them. We have a variety of 5 gallon buckets for water and a few big, 7.5 gallon buckets for feed. I’ve never been so excited to see buckets in my life!

And of course, Ben remains committed to his role as Chief Bucket Destroyer. He’s already eyeing the new lineup like it’s a personal challenge. Whether he’s cracking, flipping, or relocating them to mysterious corners of the pasture, we know it’s only a matter of time before “Ben’s Buckets” becomes an ongoing saga. Thank you all for supporting both the Sanctuary and Ben’s antics. Your kindness keeps our animals cared for and our sense of humor intact. 😁💕

Every time I see Poppy in the baby pool, having the time of her life, I can’t help but smile. Poppy was surrendered to us a few years ago with a couple of other ducks. She was the only crested variety in the bunch.

As is so common with crested breeds, Poppy suffers from a host of neurological problems. The genetic mutation which produces the crest affects the duck’s skull structure. The crest itself is a mass of fat and connective tissue that grows where there are holes in the skull. This abnormality can create direct connections to the brain, leading to seizures, coordination issues, and wry neck. Poor Poppy suffers from all three.

Poppy spends the chilliest of winter days inside with us, since she struggles to regulate her temperature in extreme heat or cold. One day, she was splashing around in about an inch of water in the bathtub when suddenly everything went quiet. I rushed to the bathroom to find Poppy in the middle of a seizure, drowning in the shallow water. I jumped into action, performing CPR and praying for a miracle the entire time. My prayers were answered. Poppy came back to life.

I’m not going to lie, I was terrified that night. I was certain we were going to lose her. We purposely never gave her what I thought was enough water to drown in should she experience a neurological episode in the tub. What’s that old adage? You can drown in a teaspoon of water. It was a freak accident, and I’m so thankful I was within earshot of the bathroom.

Now, years later, when I see her happy and healthy, splashing around in the baby pool like a perfectly normal duck would, I smile knowing how close she was to never experiencing this simple joy again. I’m just grateful she’s here, alive, safe and able to enjoy her little pool party moments. ❤

Does everyone remember Bobbi, the poor chicken who was surrendered to us in June after she was brutally attacked by her flockmates? Bobbi’s prior crew ripped her comb clear off head, pecked her one eye so severely the eyelid was torn and missing and damaged the remaining eye to the point it was swollen shut. We weren’t sure if Bobbi were going to be permanently blinded after such a horrible encounter, but we never gave up.

We’re thrilled to share, through extensive care and a bit of a miracle, not only can Bobbi see, she’s been able to join the rest of our big flock. We had her in our special needs run for a few weeks so she could acclimate safely. During that time, she made friends with one of our roosters through the fence. He showed a real interest in her, so we opted to let her free range one day… and the rest is history. She spends most of her afternoons hanging with her new beau, scratching for bugs, grazing on plants and taking dust baths next to the barn.

We so excited Bobbi not only healed her body, but her mind, as well. She’s found companionship and belonging here at the Sanctuary. Mission accomplished.
