Temperament and health are two things you can’t sleep on. 🧬
If you’ve ever had a dog that requires real, daily management because of behavioral issues, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Same goes for a dog that always seems to have health issues.
Whether you’re a breeder or a buyer, do your homework. If you’re purchasing a puppy, look beyond the puppy in front of you. Ask about the parents AND grandparents, their health history, temperament, and what testing has actually been done. As a breeder, those things should matter just as much as structure, color, size, or anything else.
Of course, genetics can surprise you. 🤷🏽♀️ You can make what you believe is the right pairing, health test, research pedigrees, and still end up with a puppy—or a few—that aren’t quite what you expected. You can’t control everything, but you can make informed decisions and stack the deck in favor of healthy, stable, well-tempered dogs.
And honestly, I feel bad for these two dogs. 😔 I’ve never seen them leave this yard. They spend so much time running back and forth along the fence, barking and jumping. They look bored out of their minds. I can’t help but wonder how much of that behavior is frustration and lack of stimulation. Dogs need more than a yard—they need interaction, enrichment, exercise, and a life outside those four walls.
A beautiful dog is great. A healthy dog with a sound temperament is everything.🐾❤️
