🐢 Happy World Turtle Day from the Wildlife Clinic of Rhode Island! 🐢

Today, we’re celebrating some of Rhode Island’s most ancient and important wild neighbors. From painted turtles basking in ponds to elusive spotted turtles hidden in wetlands, our native turtle species play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Turtles help control insects and aquatic vegetation, spread seeds, and help recycle nutrients in wetland and freshwater habitats that countless other species rely on.

Many of Rhode Island’s native turtles are facing increasing threats from habitat loss, wetland destruction, pollution, road mortality, and illegal collection. Some species, like the spotted turtle and wood turtle, are experiencing significant population declines as their fragile habitats disappear. Because turtles mature slowly and may take years to reproduce, even the loss of a few adults can have lasting impacts on local populations.

We are proud to care for and rehabilitate all native turtle species. Last year, we cared for over 200 native turtles! Through our hatchling and head-start programs, we help give vulnerable baby turtles a stronger start before release back into protected habitats. Every turtle returned to the wild represents another chance to strengthen our native populations for generations to come.

Ways to help!
🐢 Help a turtle cross the road, always move it in the direction it was heading
🐢 Never take a native turtle from the wild to keep as a pet
🐢 Do not release non-native species, such as red-eared sliders, into the environment
🐢 Turn off the location tagging if sharing any photos of turtles in the wild
🐢 Call us, or your local wildlife rehabilitator, for help with any injured turtle

Protecting turtles starts with protecting their environment, slowing down on roads during mating and nesting season, and respecting wild turtles by leaving them in their natural habitats whenever possible. Together, we can help ensure these remarkable reptiles continue thriving in Rhode Island for decades to come. 💚

Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible moms, caregivers, and nurturing hearts out there today! 💚

During the heart of baby season, we also want to recognize the real wild mothers working tirelessly every day to protect, feed, and raise their young.

At the Wildlife Clinic of Rhode Island, we see firsthand how important that care is and when wildlife become orphaned or injured, our volunteers, rehabbers, transporters, staff , and community often step in as surrogate “wild mommas,” providing warmth, feeding, comfort, safety, and second chances until those animals can return to the wild where they belong.

Today we celebrate the compassion, dedication, and instinct to care both wild and human alike. 💚

🐦 Today is both World Migratory Bird Day and Global Big Day! Each spring, Rhode Island becomes an important stopover for migratory birds traveling thousands of miles north. Every bird sighting helps researchers better understand migration patterns and protect these incredible species.

At the Wildlife Clinic of Rhode Island, we help protect migratory birds by rehabilitating injured and orphaned birds and releasing them back into the wild for a second chance to continue their journey. From window strikes to habitat loss, we see firsthand the challenges these birds face and why conservation matters.

You can help today by recording the birds you see in eBird, supporting healthy habitats, reducing outdoor light at night, and making windows safer during peak migration. Every action helps protect the birds that connect ecosystems across the globe. 🌎🐦

🚨 Volunteer Spotlight 🚨

Meet Christa Sisson!
Started: October 2025

How did you find the clinic / why volunteer?
“I’ve been aware of the Wildlife Clinic for what feels like my whole life. My mom was always helping injured wildlife, and Dr. Bird was our family’s vet. I’ve always admired the staff and volunteers here, and I’m so thankful there’s a place where injured wildlife can receive care instead of suffering. As an animal lover, volunteering here was always in the back of my mind—and I’m thrilled that time has finally come!”

Favorite part of the clinic:
“The shared sense of purpose and community.”

Favorite animals:
    •    Wild: Hippo
    •    Domestic: Cat
    •    Clinic: Opossum

Christa wears many volunteer hats, supporting animal care, the nursery, and assisting with phones. We are incredibly grateful for her hard work and dedication to our team. 💚
