These two strays were reported to have been found near Grayling, Michigan, but despite every effort, no owners ever came forward to claim them.

Now fully vetted, spayed/neutered, current on their vaccinations, and adoptable for just $50 during the month of June, Margot and Meko are ready to find families of their own.

Margot, our adorable terrier mix, and Meko, our handsome husky mix, are both on the smaller side at around 40 pounds. Since we have no history on either dog prior to arriving at the shelter, all we can share is what we’ve observed during their time with us.

Both can be a little cautious when meeting new people, but they warm up quickly once they realize you’re a friend. They are young adults who have adapted well to shelter life and have quickly learned our kennel routine, thriving with treat-based training and positive reinforcement.

While Margot and Meko get along well and enjoy each other’s company, they do not appear to be a bonded pair and can be adopted separately.

If you live in Chippewa County, you may qualify to take either Margot or Meko home on an extended home visit before making a final adoption decision. Sometimes seeing how a dog settles into your home is the best way to know you’ve found the right match.

If you’re looking for a medium-sized companion with plenty of potential and a fresh start ahead of them, consider giving Margot or Meko a chance. Sometimes the best dogs are the ones whose stories we don’t know yet.

For more information or to schedule a meet and greet, please call the shelter. Messages sent through social media and Petfinder are not always able to be answered in a timely manner, and calling is the quickest way to reach us.

UPDATE-Last baby has passed. We appreciate all the messages and shares. It takes a village.

Do you have a dog who has had puppies within the last few days?

We’re reaching out with a desperate request. Our new momma has devastatingly passed from sepsis. Despite medical intervention and around-the-clock care, we have lost all but one puppy.

We are not giving up on this little one without a fight.

We have been consulting with breeders and experienced neonatal caregivers, and one suggestion was to find a lactating mother dog who may still be producing colostrum.

If you, or someone you know, has a nursing mother dog with puppies that are only a few days old, please contact us as soon as possible.

Please share. The right person may see this, and it could make all the difference for this baby’s chance of survival

Important Shelter Update

Due to a respiratory illness affecting cats in our shelter, we are temporarily closing our cat rooms to the public this week to help prevent further spread and protect the animals in our care.

We are also temporarily pausing owner cat surrenders. If you need to surrender a cat, please call the shelter and we will place you on a waiting list and contact you as space becomes available.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to keep our cats healthy and provide them with the best care possible. Updates will be posted as the situation changes.

Happy Adoption Sunday!

We’ve started a new tradition of sharing a happy adoption story each Sunday to help kick off the week with a smile.

This week we’re featuring David, formerly known as Ziggy!

David’s new mom tells us that he is happy, loved, and has become best friends with her daughter. Seeing him settle into family life and build such a special bond is exactly what we hope for every animal that comes through our doors

Thank you to David’s family for giving him the loving home he deserves. Stories like this remind us that shelter life is only a chapter—not the whole story.

Here’s to many years of adventures, cuddles, and memories together, David. Happy Adoption Sunday!

Do you have an adoption story you’d like to share? We’d love to hear it! Send us a PM and your pet may be featured in a future Happy Adoption Sunday post!

Things got pretty cheesy at Brimley!

The 6th graders at Brimley Area Schools recently proved that philanthropy and processed dairy can go hand in hand.

Students raised $160 for the shelter with a “Cheese Your Teacher” fundraiser. For just $1, they could launch a slice of cheese at the teacher of their choice. A special shout-out to the amazing teachers who volunteered to be targets. It takes a special kind of educator to show up to work knowing you might leave smelling faintly of cheddar. Thank you for being such great sports and helping your students turn a fun idea into something meaningful for the animals. What we love most is seeing young people come up with creative ways to help animals in need. These students turned a simple, silly idea into food, medical care, toys, and enrichment for shelter pets. It’s a reminder that you don’t have to do something huge to make a difference—sometimes all it takes is a little creativity, a lot of enthusiasm, and apparently, a few slices of cheese.

With four more dog surrenders today and no scheduled dog overnights or adoptions, we’ve had to double up kennels. We also have an unexpected litter from an unclaimed stray, and with our puppy ward currently being used for a cat hoarding case, we had to move puppies into our quarantine cat room.

Right now, we have no open dog kennels left. Any additional incoming dogs may have to be housed outside.

We are in crisis mode once again — this time with dogs.

In all the years we’ve been open, the past six months have brought some of the highest numbers we’ve ever seen to our little rural shelter and we honestly don’t know what this means going forward. The need in our community has become overwhelming, and our little staff has been pushed far past burnout mode trying to keep up with the constant intake and daily care these animals deserve.

Lately it feels like animals have become easier to give up on, and shelters everywhere are feeling the weight of it. Our community has always pulled together in times of need — whether it’s for the two-legged or the four-legged — and right now, we truly need your help.

How can you help?

Every share matters. Every foster home matters. Every adoption opens space for another animal in need.

With only one kennel open in the building and over 30 dogs currently waiting for homes, we are running a $50 dog adoption special through June 30!

Every dog comes:
• Spayed or neutered
• Current on DHLPP vaccine
• Current on rabies vaccine

If you can’t adopt, please consider fostering. Even a short break from the shelter can make a huge difference for a dog waiting for their forever family.

Dog meet and greets are by appointment only, so please call for the quickest response. We are not always able to monitor messages through social media or Petfinder in a timely manner.

Huge thank you to the kind donor who brought our cats some fresh cat grass for enrichment!

Safe to say…it was a HIT. 😂 The cats fully embraced their inner tiny jungle tigers and absolutely demolished it. As you can see from the pictures, there may have been a little too much enthusiasm involved.

Enrichment is so important for shelter cats. Little things like cat grass, toys, cozy beds, and time out to explore help reduce stress and keep their minds active while they wait for homes.

Thank you for helping brighten their day — even if housekeeping may never recover from the aftermath.
