A huge THANK YOU to Tanglewood Marsh Golf Course for hosting a golf scramble to benefit the Chippewa County Animal Shelter!

We are so grateful to everyone who came out to golf, supported the event, donated, and helped make it possible. Community support like this makes such a difference for the animals in our care!

We also want to give a special shoutout to Elizabeth and Joanna, who collected returnable cans and raised an amazing $150 for our shelter! Proof that even something as simple as collecting cans can make a big difference for animals in need!

We are incredibly fortunate to have such a generous and caring community. From all of us at the shelter, both two-legged and four-legged, THANK YOU!

Meet Venus — A Girl Who Never Stopped Loving People!

Venus came to us as part of a heartbreaking neglect case. She had been locked in a room without food for days at a time. She was so severely malnourished that she required a strict refeeding program. She was so desperate for food that she would even search our dustpans for the tiniest crumbs. (That video is in the comments)

But what amazes us most? Not once did Venus allow what humans had done to her change how she felt about people.

She absolutely LOVES humans!

Venus recently completed our Making Pawsitive Changes training program at Kinross Correctional Facility, where her handler got to know the happy, energetic, affectionate girl we’ve come to love!

Here’s what we learned about Venus:

• She loves playing with other dogs and enjoys a good wrestling match!
• She’s smart, food-motivated, and knows sit and down.
• She’s energetic outdoors but quiet and well-behaved inside.
• She absolutely adores human attention!
• She’s still working on her manners and will benefit from continued training.

Venus would thrive in an active home with plenty of exercise, companionship, and love.

When we think about Venus, we remember that starving little girl searching for crumbs in a dustpan.

Today, she’s happy, playful, and full of life.
Venus doesn’t know that people failed her. She doesn’t hold a grudge. She doesn’t know she deserved better.

But we do.

And we’re determined to make sure she never has to wonder when her next meal will come again. Venus deserves a full belly, a warm bed, and a family who will love her forever.

A Special Thank You to Our Wonderful Mia Munz!

If you’ve been around the shelter on Wednesdays over the years, chances are you’ve met our sweet Mia! Mia has been a dedicated volunteer at the Chippewa County Animal Shelter for many years, faithfully spending her Wednesdays helping us care for the animals. She is such a special part of our shelter family, and we are so lucky to have her!

This week, Mia went above and beyond by donating some much-needed items from our shelter wish list!

When she’s not helping us at the shelter, Mia also works at Bay Mills Community College. She’s one busy lady!

Mia was especially excited to have her picture taken so she could be featured on our page, and we think it’s about time she got her moment in the spotlight

Ginger’s Story

Ginger is a spunky, 7-month-old mix breed pup that has tail wags and wiggles for everyone she meets. With those cute furrowed brows, her former guardian listed her as a shar pei mix! She lost her home due to a recent move; her previous owners describe her as “friendly, playful, independent, loves to be outside, and smart.” She has been exposed to children ages 5 and up and is housebroken.

Ginger has gone camping and loves to explore nature trails with her people. She has made dog friends in the past, although she has not ever lived with other animals. A meet and greet with any potential housemates would be required. If you are a Chippewa County resident you may qualify to take Ginger on an extended home trial before adoption.

FOUR MORE.

Four more little kittens have now been found dumped at the Munuscong State Forest Campground. These ones are much smaller and appear to be about 4 weeks. They are domestic and have been handled.

That’s on top of the kittens found near the boat launch yesterday.

We need people to understand something: there is absolutely no reason to dump kittens. Our shelter does not turn away kittens. If you live in Chippewa County and surrender a litter of kittens to us, we will even provide a spay for the mother cat.

So what exactly is accomplished by leaving tiny kittens at a campground to fend for themselves?

They don’t suddenly know how to survive because you dropped them outside. They don’t magically know how to hunt. They face cold nights, predators, starvation, illness, vehicles—and a very real chance of suffering and dying before anyone ever finds them.

Thankfully, these four were found.

Please. Bring them to us. Don’t dump them.

These kittens were thankfully found near the boat launch at Munuscong River State Forest Campground before something happened to them.

If you have kittens you cannot care for and you are a Chippewa County resident, bring them to us. There is no surrender fee, and we will provide you with a free spay for the mother cat. Please don’t make their first experience with the world being abandoned outside and left to survive.

There is absolutely no reason to dump kittens or any domestic animal, for that matter. What exactly do you think happens when you dump kittens outside? Do you think they suddenly know how to hunt and catch enough mice to survive? Do you think they know how to protect themselves from predators? Find safe shelter? Stay warm when we had frost last night?

These are domestic kittens. Leaving them at a campground, boat launch, roadside, or anywhere else to fend for themselves is not giving them a better life. It is putting their lives at risk.

They deserved better.

Do better.

Piper is a happy, wiggly, 40 lb, 11-month-old pup looking for a loving home to join! She has been exposed to other dogs and cats and is reported to do well with them. Piper has also lived with children ages 1–6 and is a friend to all people.

One of the best things we can say about Piper is that she’s our go-to girl! ❤️ When someone wants to introduce their dog to a dog-friendly shelter dog, Piper is often our first choice. If we need an easy dog for someone to take for a walk, we reach for Piper. She’s friendly, social, and just an all-around enjoyable pup to spend time with.

Happy 8th Birthday, Marlena!

Marlena Sarda already knows what she wants to be when she grows up—a veterinarian! So when it came time to celebrate her 8th birthday, she asked her guests to bring cat and dog toys or pet food instead of gifts for her, so she could donate them to the animals at our shelter.

Marlena stopped by with quite the haul, along with her brother Massi and her good friends, who came to show their support and spend some time with the animals.

We absolutely love seeing kids with such big hearts for animals. Thank you, Marlena, for choosing to make your birthday special for our shelter pets, too. We hope you had a wonderful 8th birthday!
