One of the more fascinating aspects of modern equine ophthalmology is the use of regenerative materials during surgery. In some procedures, veterinarians create a patch using amnion—tissue derived from the mare’s placenta—because of its healing properties and natural stem cells. In more advanced cases, surgeons may use tissue from the horse’s own eye to create a protective graft over the damaged area.

The goal is not only saving the eye itself, but preserving comfort and quality of life. “A successful outcome means the horse is comfortable, pain-free, and still has vision,” Dr. Hanni said. Even if a small scar remains, many horses return to normal function.

We want your horses to maintain strong vision and comfortable eyesight for as long as they can get it. If you are worried about anything regarding your horse’s eyes, give us a call asap!

For many horse owners, hearing the word “fracture” immediately brings fear. In the past, serious fractures were often considered untreatable. Today, advancements in surgical techniques, implants, stabilization, imaging, and rehabilitation have created far more options.

Although some fractures are still catastrophic, many horses now have a realistic chance of recovery—and some may even return to athletic performance.

Not Every Fracture Is Catastrophic.

The word “fracture” includes a wide range of injuries. Small bone chips found in joints are also fractures, but they are very different from a severely broken long bone.

Bone chips are commonly discovered during lameness evaluations or pre-purchase examinations. Their presence does not automatically mean a horse cannot perform.

Dr. Maciel encourages owners to remember that they are buying the horse, not the x-ray. The horse’s soundness, performance history, intended use, age, and clinical examination should all be considered alongside imaging findings.

She may be a P*e Wee, but Lainee O’Keeffe came to RUN! 👑 Lainee and “Waffles” turned in the fastest time of the Royal Crown Rapid City P*e Wee Race… but you’ll want to watch until the end because her interview afterward is even sweeter than her run. 🫶🏼

We loved getting to watch our youngest competitors have their moment in the arena and make some pretty special memories along the way. 👑

A huge THANK YOU to the sponsors who helped make Royal Crown Rapid City and moments like these possible!

Advancements in equine dentistry have also dramatically improved both diagnosis and treatment. Modern imaging, improved dental equipment, sedation protocols, and advanced tools like oral endoscopy and CT imaging are helping veterinarians identify issues earlier and treat horses more comfortably than ever before.

Perhaps the biggest shift, though, is philosophical.

Years ago, many horse owners only addressed dental care once a horse was visibly struggling. Today, the focus has shifted toward prevention — identifying problems before they become severe enough for the horse to finally show pain.

Because when it comes to dental disease, silence doesn’t always mean comfort.
