Puppy vaccination timing can look straightforward on paper, but maternally derived antibodies add an important layer of complexity.

For the DA2PP series, AAHA recommends beginning vaccination at 6–8 weeks of age and administering subsequent doses 2–4 weeks apart, with the final dose given after 16 weeks of age.

Those early maternal antibodies help protect puppies, but they can also interfere with the response to distemper and parvovirus vaccines, which is why timing across the series matters.

There recently has been an uptick in Feline Panleukopenia cases in the area. Some shelters have even limited and/or stopped intake of cats for periods of time, due to this increase in cases. So, what is panleuk and why should you care?

Feline Panleuk is a serious viral disease of cats (including "big cats", like bobcats) that is related to canine parvovirus and has no "cure". Panleuk can be fatal (cause death), especially in young kittens and when symptomatic treatment is delayed. Panleuk commonly causes the following symptoms in cats (similar to parvo in dogs):

- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Depression/lethargy
- Loss of appetite
- Dehydration (may appear as sunken eyes or dry gums)
- Painful belly

Panleuk is highly contagious and can be spread through bodily fluids (e.g. urine, f***s, nasal discharge) and from mother cats to their kittens. Mothers infected with panleuk during pregnancy can also lead to kittens being born with underdeveloped and/or damaged brains (cerebellar hypoplasia or CH), leading to kittens being born with neurological problems and are commonly referred to as wobbly kittens. Kittens infected early in life can also sustain brain injury, leading to similar neurological issues.

Cats and kittens don't need to have direct contact with the bodily secretions to become infected. Fomites (objects contaminated with the secretions) can also lead to infection. This includes toys, bedding, bowls, owner's shoes or clothing, unwashed hands of owners, etc. The virus is also highly resistant and can "live" for a long time in the environment and is resistant to disinfection.

How do you protect your beloved cat?

- Keep them up-to-date on their FVRCP vaccine (the "P" in FVRCP is for Panleukopenia). Especially kittens and cats that go outdoors and/or are potentially exposed to other cats or contaminated fomites.

- Keep your cat indoors and away from cats of unknown vaccine status and health. Even if your pet is monitored outside and doesn't come in direct contact with random cats, your yard could be contaminated by ill cats and wildlife.

- Wash your hands after handling other cats and before handling your cats. Remove any clothing and/or shoes that could be contaminated with bodily secretions, fur, etc. from other cats, before handling your cat.

If you'd like to get your cat vaccinated for FVRCP, we charge $30 for the vaccine individually. An exam fee will also be required for individual vaccination appointments. We also have cat vaccine packages that range from $60-95 and include the exam fee.

We had 2 cats come into the clinic in the last 2 days that had major health complications that stemmed from not being spayed early enough in life.

One was a 12 year old female cat that wasn't spayed and had an enormous uterine tumor. They brought her in for emergency surgery, since they thought she had a pyometra (serious uterine infection), but it was a large and invasive tumor in her uterus. She's doing okay so far post-op, we're waiting on the biopsy report to see if it was malignant (cancer) or benign (non-cancerous). If it is malignant, she will have to face the possibility of metastasis to other organs and more invasive treatments.

The other was a 13 year old female cat that was spayed, but later in life (~6 years old) and she developed mammary cancer. The cancer was aggressive and grew quickly and she decompensated quickly. She came in for humane euthanasia, since there was nothing that could be done at that point.

Please spay and neuter your pets. Not only to help with the pet overpopulation problem we have in this country, but to improve the health and longevity of your pets. Both of these situations could have possibly been avoided if they were spayed at a young age.

Kittens can (and routinely are) safely spayed and neutered at 2 lbs (~2 months of age). Also keep in mind that cats can start reproducing ~4-6 months of age and can get pregnant while nursing a litter. They also are polyestrous, meaning they have multiple heat cycles (unlike dogs that go into heat every 6 months or so). A lot of the time they will keep cycling through heat cycles until they mate, again unlike dogs. So, they can have multiple litters a year, versus 2 litters a year max for dogs.

Winky, the sweet community cat we shared the post about previously, is looking for a home! His caretaker sent this update pic and says he is adapting to indoor life and loves pets and catnip!
