Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society Saving lives, giving compassionate care & finding forever homes for thousands of animals since 1987.

The mission of the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society is to provide a caring and compassionate home for the animals in our care until we find them a forever home. On any given day, we may have up to nearly 100 dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens in our nonprofit, no kill shelter. Our shelter is tucked away on 10 rolling acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, surrounded by the natural beauty of scenic forests, mountains, waterfalls, rivers, and lakes. The dogs and puppies romp and run in spacious outdoor play yards during the day. In the evening, they are all brought indoors to sleep in their own kennel, on their own bed, with biscuits, toys and soothing music. The cats and kittens are free to play and interact in cage-less community cat rooms – each with a screened porch and large windows. Their lives are enriched with toys and daily socialization by staff and visitors alike. We welcome visitors to our shelter Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Through your support, we can maintain a high quality of care and high adoption rates for our dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens.

From the Golden Isles of coastal Georgia to the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, we give a heartfelt CHHS welcome to… 𝐒𝐀𝐑𝐆𝐄! ❤️

Handsome two-year-old Sarge is a German Shepherd mix who was in the kind and compassionate care of our friends at Grateful Cats/Canines Allies & Supporters -GCAS in St. Simons Island, Georgia.

One of their awesome team members, Keyla DeCando, made the six-hour drive to bring Sarge to his new mountain home. And along the way, Keyla shared something interesting about this handsome fellow.

𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐒 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫! ❄️

Considering it was 90 degrees when he left south Georgia, and temperatures here dipped into the 30s just 48 hours after his arrival, we'd say Sarge is one very happy mountain dog! 🐾

And there's plenty more to love about him!

Sarge loves toys and treats, he's housetrained, gets along just fine with other dogs, and warms up quickly to people he's just met. And thanks to that six-hour journey from the coast, we can also say with confidence that 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧! 🚗

Sarge's adoption includes his neuter, microchip, up-to-date vaccinations, a complimentary starter bag of food, ID tag, and even a free after-adoption session with our professional dog trainer.

𝐒𝐊𝐘𝐍𝐘𝐑𝐃! 🎤🎶

He's three years old. He's a Bluetick Coonhound. And he's got a voice that could fill an arena without a microphone.

He's handsome. He's outgoing. He loves everybody he meets, including other dogs. And he has absolutely no problem making himself heard.

Sure, Skynyrd can be vocal. But expecting a perfectly quiet Bluetick Coonhound is like listening to Southern rock with the volume turned down.

Skynyrd also loves toys, attention, and food.

Especially food.

Actually, we're pretty sure he'd negotiate his entire recording contract in dog treats. 🦴

But for all his rock-and-roll personality, Skynyrd's dreams are like those of a simple man.

His own person. His own sweet home. Alabama or anywhere. ❤️

And someday, when Skynyrd is finally settled into his very own forever home, we have a feeling he'll look around, take it all in, and think to himself...

This past Friday, the CHHS Events Team traveled to Asheville to participate in Pet Project with WLOS ABC 13. It was a wonderful day spent surrounded by the loving energy of CHHS Shelter pups, connecting with fellow animal advocates from across the Carolinas, and witnessing the magic of three precious puppies finding their forever homes. Perhaps the highlight of our day was being reunited with WLOS' own adopting angel, Megan, and previous CHHS Hero Pet, Clyde, who captured our hearts with their instant connection at last year's Pet Project. ❤️

💖 HERO PET HAPPY TAILS! 💖 We rescued Peanut in May after he was found as a stray in Highlands. After 163 days of compassionate care at our no-kill shelter, this sweet adorable pup has a beautiful new family and a loving forever home in Pisgah Forest. Happy Tails, Peanut! 🥜🐶💝

Some dogs may know the Song of their People. Copper knows the whole soundtrack. 🎶🐾

Our Copper is loyal, lovable, and just a little bit goofy in the best way. 🐶💛

This handsome 4-year-old hound was found wandering on Bull Pen Road, but those days are behind him. Now his biggest concerns?

👉 “Who’s throwing my toy?”
👉 “Are we going for a walk?”
👉 “Did someone say snacks??”

Copper is affectionate, playful, and always ready for his next adventure. He walks like a gentleman on a leash. Until he remembers he’s excited, and then, well… he’s an 𝑒𝑛𝑡ℎ𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑐 gentleman. 😄

And yes, he’s got that classic hound dog voice. 🎤 But think of it less as barking and more as his way of saying, “Hey best friend, where have you been all my life?”

Copper’s done the wandering. Now he’s ready to stick by someone’s side for good… preferably someone who appreciates a happy howl and a whole lot of love. 🏡💛

Copper’s adoption includes being neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and a free after-adoption training session.

Copper is looking for his forever friend. And he’s already practicing your welcome-home song. 🎶🐾
