I wasn’t planning to speak publicly about this experience, but some stories carry lessons worth sharing.

When you own and run an operation like mine, you do not simply hire people to do your job for you. Your hands, eyes, and ears are on everything. You know every mare, every foal, every horse. You know their personalities, their quirks, their habits, and the small signs that tell you something important long before anyone else might see it.

At 55, I have a lifetime of education in horses behind me. Like many breeders, I came to breeding later in life, but foaling is not something you learn overnight. It asks for every hour spent watching, listening, handling, caring, failing, learning, and getting back up again.

Breeding and foaling require a lifetime with horses. A lifetime of learning. And over time, that knowledge becomes something people may call intuition.

It is not magic.

It is experience.

It is love for the horse.

It is hope for the future of the sport and the hope for a world where the love for these extraordinary animals is never lost to ego, judgment, or greed.

Ulara is fine. She was a maiden mare, and sometimes motherhood does not unfold in the perfect storybook way people imagine. That is part of breeding, too - knowing when to step in, when to adapt, and when to do what is best for the foal.
