As dogs mature, especially certain breeds, they begin the process of learning to discern between who is friend or foe. Some tend towards more skepticism, which should be expected and respected. Putting them in situations where they don’t have the time to process and make good decisions can lead to a host of explosive, reactive behaviors. It’s not the time for him to be going to Home Depot and getting surprised by a reactive dog dragging the owner down the aisle. He feels ramped up just by the sight of another dog at 40 feet away. My plan is to create as many experiences as possible where his initial suspicions turn into positive associations with both people and dogs. Obedience comes second, but it will play a crucial role in him building a solid relationship with his owners. We can’t force him to be something he isn’t, we have to look for the windows that are open right now and use them before they’re closed.

If your dog gets distracted or gives up easily during play, you gotta try to keep it light, and there’s a few little tricks that can help.

Not too many rules right off the bat. Let the dog make some mistakes and give the information that they’re on the wrong track gently (ah-ah) as you see me doing when she goes to grab the toy from my hand.

Short throws so your dog doesn’t have as much room for considering other options on their way out/back.

Try making the toy have a little more movement, always away from the dog, not thrusted towards them.

Play a little game where you’re pretending to steal the toy from them if they seem disinterested or distracted.

Run away from your dog with the toy if they tend to get bored and wander off.

End the game before they’re totally exhausted or disinterested.
