One of my favorite protection exercises, the call off or stopped attack. Done properly the dog must exhibit very high levels of control without any diminished enthusiasm for the biting exercises. Thank you Anthony Sagstetter for all your excellent work!

This is a class we designed for our Immersion students, and here it is for the first time outside that format. It takes the key principles we cover in our core obedience courses and focuses them exclusively on companion dogs. A few of the main topics covered include…. Relationship: What is it and why is it important?

Engagement: A foundational principle, includes focus, readiness to learn, and value in handler.

Communication system for pet dogs (simplified markers and the importance of a conditioned punisher, as well as other forms of verbal and physical communication).

What is the appropriate level of motivation for a pet dog? When is less more?

What behaviors do we teach, and why?

What should the behaviors look like (criteria setting)

Black and white versus grey behaviors.

Goal setting (what does the dog/handler team need, and in what environments do they need to perform)

Developing interactive rewards (it’s not what you get, it’s the interaction)

How do we fade, or reduce the frequency, of rewards? When and how to transition from continuous to intermittent reinforcement.

Alternative rewards and alternative forms of feedback.

How do we shorten our timelines while still being fair to the dog?

Leash pressure and “layering” the leash over behaviors.

Combining luring and leash pressure for shortened timelines.

How and when to use negative reinforcement and negative and positive punishment.

Verbal cues versus physical cues.

Handling drills for grooming and vet visits.

Management for pet dog owners (an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure).

Conditioned Arousal and its role in allowing calmness.

Electronic collar work for the pet dog.

Do I want/need to be free of the tools?

Handler body language, energetics, tone of voice, and controlling arousal levels.

Should pet dogs play (tug/retrieve), and what are appropriate games?

Enrichment/Exercise for the pet dog (things for clients to do beyond obedience).

Biological fulfillment and its role in preventing behavior problems and making a happy dog.
The most important behaviors and more!

Well executed obedience training does more than simply teach the dog to sit or down, it serves our work in many ways, and has the potential to change the dog’s worldview. This snippet is from a reactivity workshop included in our membership. You can see details on our website, and stay tuned for an announcement regarding our new course, Pet Dog Fundamentals, open for registration now!

We have a really nice, 9 week old female puppy available from our Loups du Soleil JJJ litter (Ricky du Chemin de L’Esperance FR2 and Edit du Loups du Soleil MR3). A last minute cancellation made her available. Really nice puppy! Contact .the.mal for details.

Another clip from our five day Reactivity Workshop. Leash skills are an integral part of all dog training, but they become especially important when dealing with reactivity. As with many of our training skills they take practice, even if you use a stuffed Zebra 😊 The entire five day workshop is available in our membership.

Join us for a three-day, deep dive into the process of creating powerful and durable reward events. We will explore reinforcement as both a results driven process characterized by mechanical skills and intentional steps, as well as a genetically-driven and highly nuanced social interaction based on cooperation, structure, and a wide range of unique and variable choices throughout the training process. See details at our website under in-person training. https://michaelellisschool.com/product/positive-reinforcement-workshop-in-santa-rosa-ca-june-19-21-2026/

A little snippet from the deep dive Reactivity Workshop I did with my good friend, a while back.
Staying calm and present when handling reactive dogs is a necessary skill that can be learned, but it takes practice! The entire 5 day workshop was just added to our membership service today, check it out through our website.

A tradition at the Kynology events is our group training before, and often, after class. Here are a few clips of Forrest and I training my dog, Snug (full sessions in our membership) recently. Kynology focuses on the confluence of science and practice, but no one says it can’t be fun 😊 Visit the Kynology website to register, there are both in-person and virtual options. Hope to see you there!

Good dog training is all about the process. Enjoying the incremental progress that comes with showing up consistently and doing the work. The joy lives in the process! When we cut corners or look for quick fixes we create unnecessary drama and are almost always less effective. Revel in the journey and focus just a little less on getting to your goal asap.
