The Netherlands has officially banned most consumer fireworks to protect animals from the fear, stress, and suffering caused by loud explosions.

The new rules took effect on August 1, 2026, and are set to apply for the first time during the 2026 to 2027 New Year celebrations. The ban aims to reduce the harm caused by fireworks while allowing limited exceptions.

Every year, loud fireworks leave dogs and cats trembling, hiding, and desperately trying to escape. Wild birds can also panic and take flight in the darkness, putting themselves at risk as they flee the noise.

The ban does not cover every type of firework. Small category F1 fireworks remain permitted, and professional displays or certain approved community events may still be allowed.

Animals cannot understand why the sky suddenly erupts with deafening noise. They only feel the fear. Celebrations should bring happiness without forcing innocent animals to suffer.
